    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

ALL THE DOUBT YOU'RE STANDING IN BETWEEN

In an eerily similar way to Jakub, Wolfbane was beginning to adjust and appreciate the changes occurring inside himself. At first it hadn’t been more than a vivid sharpness to his senses. Everything he was experiencing felt like he’d wiped a thick layer of steam from clear glass. Like all this time it was there waiting, and now he could see through it so easily.

The rampant sound of Jakub’s split hooves is thunderous to him from miles away. Wolfbane jerks his head at attention, totally rigid in the same movement. His ears quiver and then he can hear the winterous snap of brittle, bare twigs and cones.

Bane slips away to intercept the newcomer on feet that make next to no sound. He’s so quick and agile now that the way his body moves is… unnatural, a bit. Like a creeping, crawling thing wearing the skin of a striped horse.

Behind Jakub there’s a faint whisper: the mist swirls, Wolfbane is quietly standing there with an expectant expression. “Something funny?” He asks, as if it had been the horned beast’s chuckle that drew him out from the long shade. “Or just in a good mood?” The smaller stallion wondered, smiling.

Wolfbane looked uncommonly serene. He didn’t seem to flinch or quirk at all. No tail swishing gently, no ruffling the long, white wings folded over his ribs. Perfectly still, unless you looked hard enough and noticed him breathing every once in a while.

Something about Jakub felt recognizable, despite the fact he’d changed in nearly every way possible since their only meeting. Thinking about it without much success, the new Taigan smelled him for what he was (a Tephra visitor,) and felt that was enough reason he should come right away. He couldn’t have possibly guessed that a part of his past was breaking through that distant steam of his new change, coming back to haunt him.
