    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Valensia
One minute she is on the white page with her name by her side, alone and scared. The next she’s back in Tephra, not a unicorn, not a girl, not a woman. Just her. Black roan, honey-eyed Valensia the yearling. Beloved daughter of Femur and Longclaw. Her legs shake, and her body hiccups after hours of sobbing having stressed it to its max. The first moment is spent in complete terror waiting for the painful morph to begin, for some odd limbed creature to send her into fits of agony. It doesn’t come, the yearling filly stands there waiting for something, anything to happen; and nothing does.

What had she learned? Well that she is a lot stronger than she thought she was. That maybe she needs to depend on herself a little more. Possibly she should stop questioning her elders so much? An image of mother’s proud eyes on her daughter because she questions makes Valensia gulp down another sob. She bites her lip, blinking rapidly to rid herself of the sting; mother’s and father’s approval is all she lives for. Besides any of it mother and father have always been so careful never to allow her to want, hunger, or f-for-forget about her EVER! Falling asleep in the grassy island they call home was the first time she had ever experienced anything that was remotely close to discomfort.

Fear is such an ugly word, and right now its all that she can understand after such a harrowing experience. Getting back to her paradise of an island with the family is all she wants to do. Looking around her though, she doesn’t recognize anything but the spring that marks the center of the kingdom. She takes a hesitant step closer to the water, how to get back home? Okay, you got this, she squeezes her eyes shut; takes a deep breath in. holds it. Then lets it out in a huff. Maybe now she can use those skills she picked up to find home.

“And there was you - your fair self,
    always delicately dressed,
with white firm fingers sure of touch
    in delicate true work.
    I loved you then.”
