    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

do you think God stays in his heaven because he, too, lives in fear of what he has created?

His father is gone and the muzzle has been cast off in favor of limitless freedom. The borders of foreign kingdoms mean nothing to him now as he explores the world around him. The child passes through Hyaline without a second of hesitation and then into Taiga, exploring the forests there. In his heart, he knows the true destination, but he fears the answer may be one he does not care for. What if they are not like him at all? What if they are mere pretenders, as the serpents are to Gospel? Ghaul swallows nervously before stepping one talon into Loess, then another.

If they are false then he will tear them down, he thinks. He will rip their wings from them and make them pay for their mockery. The sun still manages to bathe him in its warmth despite the late season as he slinks over the hills of Loess. The fledgling lifts his head, examining the blurs of yellow and red as he tracks the scent of fire and scales. There is a curious chittering in his throat as he moves forward, head lowered like a dog hunting down a fox.

There – he can see her brighter than most against the backdrop of blue here. She has talons, like him, and he finds himself pausing as he watches the outline of her claw touching the fern. He can’t see how beautiful she is but something in his molten core churns just the same at the sight of her. This one is no pretender, no false beauty sent for him to destroy.

A gleeful smile takes over his scaled face as he skitters forward, quickly invading her personal space as he traces her cheek with his nose. She is soft, like his surrogate mother, but she smells of dragons the way he had expected. Perhaps she is a delicate variation of his kind, then? Something to be protected and treasured, he assumes. Ghaul croons softly in delight as he nuzzles his face against hers in perhaps his first display of affection since his birth. Even if all the others are scum and refuse, he has a twin flame to call his very own.

His wings flutter as he takes a step back, still grinning with all his awful fangs. The stars across his cheeks and the base of his horns seems to glow brighter in her presence, or maybe they are fueled by his hummingbird heart.

I am Ghaul, and we belong together,” he says confidently, his small chest puffing out proudly.
