    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

He'd gone off on his own for a bit. Didn't realize it at first, just wandered quietly along the coastline, watching the tide easing in toward his hooves and back out again. He'd let his mind get lost while listening to the sea and the wind blowing through the trees. Feeling that wind toying with his hair and the feathers in his wings tucked into his side. He wasn't sure how long he'd walked before he snapped out of his daze and realized he was out of sight from Mama-Lacey and Reilly.

No need to panic, though. He could take care of himself. And this island wasn't all that big. Despite that tinge of fear deep down that things could change again at any moment, that he could lose them as he had his birth family, he continued on. Maybe he could try flying again. At least alone, there wouldn't be anyone to laugh at his failures. So the beach probably wasn't the best area to start, open as it was. But inland, there were trees to get in his way. So. Here then.

He takes a big breath and stretches his wings out, letting the breeze air them out. A few shallow waves of them so that he can feel the pressures. It's been a while since he's tried, but he reminds himself the sand is soft to land on if he falls, and what doesn't kill him makes him stronger. Another deep breath and slow exhale as he beats his wings steady and evenly. Begins to trot and beat them, finding a rhythm, visualizing himself rising, plotting his path. As he picks up speed, he feels the pressure building beneath his appendages. Feels the pull of his muscles, savoring it. Loping now, thrusting his wings deeper, stronger. Taking another big breath, he feels his feet leaving the ground. This is the part that he has tripped up on before. His heart thrums and he struggles to focus, not on his feet leaving the ground but on his wings carrying him to rise. And rise he does, with another big thrust.

But he fumbles, and he's not sure why. His head is light and he loses balance. Tries to catch himself, heart racing and wings flapping, legs swinging. But something isn't right and he rather dramatically and slowly crashes back to the sand, sliding on his knees and changing the angle of his wings in an attempt to not eat the stuff. Dang it!!! "Ugh!" He grunts as he angrily stomps the ground as he stands and shakes himself off. Huffs as he briefly looks over his wings, wondering what the problem was. Sucks there's no one to help.
