    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

just give me that wide smile made for putting songs into the hearts of the doomed

She had lost weight again, a bit thin and undernourished. And yet her pale hair still shined in a curtain over her brilliant blue eyes. As though it may hide her, give her the gift of invisibility. Nothing could really hide her from catching the wrong eye. She always seemed in the wrong place at just the wrong time. Every good thing in her life had been taken away abruptly, short-lived. Now every blessing seemed a curse.

Her mother and aunt had been her life and suddenly they vanished without a trace, without taking her with them. Her baby sister that briefly adopted her also vanished. Lost forever, that sweet baby that almost felt like home. Then Tioga, another adopted sister of a sort. A protector for the first and only time in her life. She too, was gone.

    And then there was Bruise.
But she didn't want to think about Bruise.

Bruise was a complicated-- No, no. She wasn't thinking about him. She was walking. Or something close to it, a little quicker. Maybe a power-walk. Her head was held low, beautiful gray body slipping through the trees. She normally didn't like forests. Creepiest places. The only good thing about them was that they hid her from view. Mostly. Partly.

It typically worked better if she didn't run straight into someone, bumping his broad shoulder.

She blushed furiously and shrank down so small-- or wished she could, she so wished she could! Her wide blue eyes peered up at him from a dark face, nearly glowing in contrast. Her shoulders were tense and her mouth parted in a silent gasp. Oh god, just run. He could be nice, but how likely was that with her luck? She should definitely just run. That hadn't ended so well for her one time.

But she wasn't going to think about Bruise.

She spun on her heels and took off without a word, without a backward glance, her gait a bit unusual and awkward with the bend in her spine. And once again, that creamy silk tail waved like a white banner of surrender that would likely go unheeded.

and catch a cold heart staring at the water; babe, remember you flew
