    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Breathing in; Breathing out[Heda, Ivar, Any Kingdom]

i'll use you as a makeshift gauge of how much to give and how much to take
As he meets Karaugh’s gaze, Ivar wonders idly if she had been this bold in front of his mother.

Surely not, he thinks; Kraugh seems the sort to value her own life. Or perhaps Djinni was simply less possessive of his father than Heda was of Ivar. His impression of monogamy is skewed, taught opposite schemas by each parent, and the lessons all underpinned by the undeniable biology of his kelpie self.

Still, Heda is the warmth beside him most nights and he will not hurt her. Sylva is the enemy and Loess is a quiet kingdom; Ivar will not jeopardize them. The piebald stallion feels the sensation of both Heda’s soft feathers and Kraugh’s warm breath, and presses his shoulder reassuringly to the Queen’s. He meets her gaze when she looks up at him questioningly; had she not heard their lack of introductions, the fact that Karaugh had asked after his mother? Perhaps she had missed it during her rush to assert her claim over him.

Karaugh continues to speak, and at her mention of her loyalty to her home, Ivar cannot help but smile. Loyalty to her home? More like loyalty to herself. He hides the expression in Heda’s navy mane, pressing a gentle kiss to the nape of her neck as she introduces herself and asks after the terms of an alliance. This area is her forte, after all. He is only the border guard and support when she requires it.
