    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The metallic of his body doesn't shine here as it does most everywhere else.  Thick canopies of pined trees shelter him from the light of day.  Though today the sun is hidden behind thickened haze.  Winter is in full force and it may be the sight of the looming clouds or the ache in his metal joints that convince him a storm is brewing.  Emerald eyes turn upwards as he slows from a two beat pace to a halt.  Tiny specks of daylight filter through and it is just enough to allow him to see clearly below the towering redwoods.  It would take a significant snow fall to reach them here but he is not taking any chances.

From his stand still, his gaze shifts to the area surrounding him.  There is acres of tree trunks spread before him but he was seeking something a bit more sturdy to house his sibling sisters.  Finding nothing suitable here, he presses on and follows the water way south.  Having left his sisters to fend for themselves for the time being, he travels fast.  Not wanting to be gone horribly long, he trots steadily along an untouched path.  The soft crunch of dried needles below his iron hooves is the only sound keeping dead silence at bay.  He welcomes it almost, missing the soft chatter of his siblings.

Soon he comes along peaks of rock and relief floods over him.  A cavern would suffice for now and so begins his search for an inlet that is uninhabited.  Being winter, many forest critters seek refuge in these nooks of earth.  They needed something larger though than a small dark hole...

He rounds a corner to find a darkened hole in the side of a rocky formation.  Coming to stand at the edge of the shadow, his ears flick forwards, searching for sounds within the dark abyss.  Finding nothing of immediate concern, he breaths a relieved sigh.  This would work perfectly, he thinks.  His limbs cross to turn him about and go fetch his sisters, when suddenly he hears a pitter patter coming from within the darkness.  His muscles coil as he forces himself to turn back slightly.  Emerald eyes strain to see what hides within the shadows of the cavern, his steely heartbeat quickens in anticipation...

For one who’s almost a yearling, even Raj is a little lanky. Skinny, even - with his growing up in Sylva and spending half if not all his time in Taiga also, he does a lot of walking, stalking, and sometimes, when invited, also hunting. His favourite part of that game is obviously the stalking part, not so much the running or even the killing. He’d rather have someone else do that, as long as he can scare the prey and after the kill, try to find out how they work. But his investigations take time and, because he cannot eat the meat, he has little to no time to graze, leaving his yearling sized, anglo-arabian stature even slimmer than it should be.

No matter. The mind is far more important. He’s become fascinated with himself, too - he’s see-through now, and while that’s funny, he wonders how it must look when he opens up a creature, for someone standing next to or behind him. They would still be able to see the wound, perhaps even better than he. He’s possibly jealous of others, but well, that wouldn’t help him anyway.

The other boys are mostly here for the thrill of the hunt and kill, he’s noticed. While he’s a little creeper himself, he does fancy himself to be more of an intellect than that, and of course being a demigod he’s pretty sure that life is more than just killing.

Which is why he doesn’t engage the steal creature. Rather, he’s curious; his translucent appaloosa body approaches him, in a neutral looking way. ”How’d you get that?” he wonders. Had he been born that way, his mother would not have lived, surely. Oh, but maybe she didn’t? He smiles a bit at the thought, imagining how that must have looked.

After the clatter of hooves comes a smallish voice, mostly curiosity of tone.  This causes his head to tilt in confusion but also that whoever this was, was transparent.  Faded lines barely make up the scrawny form of a yearling before him.  The shock stuns his speech for the moment and suddenly he is aware that the eyes blink at him in question.  "Oh... Ummm... What?" His words fumble from his emerald lips, having forgot the inquiry or the meaning behind it.

His metallic body shifts cautiously but all fear as left him.  Surely this youngling meant him no harm, and so he settles into the space he occupies.  Clearing his voice, he tries again, "Hello there.  I'm Kromium... Who might you be?" It was always best to introduce oneself, especially in a new territory...

Tssk, tssk. Not a very smart one, it seems. Sure, he's translucent - but he's perfectly fine, no need to go staring. Why it took so long for the chromium boy to process his question, Rajanish doesn't understand - but ah, well, there were more than just this metallic kid (okay maybe he's older than Raj) who can be really confused, so he lets the insult of staring through Raj, slide.

Instead he repeats the question, rephrased. "How'd you get the metal." he tells him pointedly, slightly out of patience. But the other seems to have come to the normal - boring! - parts of conversation already. Ugh, best get that over with. "I'm Raj. Now will you tell me about the mutation?" he pries.

He steps closer - the other male is older, and he must think he is no threat - scrawny little Raj, and see-through at that. But his translucent appearance has nothing to do with his actual physique; he eats normally, smells normally, and above all, would be very real if one tried to touch him. He's not an actual ghost, after all.

But this one... is he truly metal? No. But his hide might be. Hmm. So how does he move?

He comes even closer to inspect. Metal plates lining over one another, shifting where the other boy moves. Ah. Well, that would explain the movement thing. "It's like scales." He concludes. But a whole lot bigger of course. He inspects the other boy's eye and ear and teeth, and tugs the mane. Hmm. "I guess you seem normal." he concludes - almost disappointed.

Krom looks at the stranger with questioning glances.  How the others body can be whole and drained from color, but he is no one to pry at the ways of Beqanna.  He is an iron horse after all.

The transparent being shimmers closer but he remains unmoved.  Listening to what is said, and slightly confused still at his question. "My metal...?" He ponders for a brief moment before concluding, "I guess I was born this way." But no that wasn't true either, now was it.  He thinks harder on the matter and remembers a time when he was nothing more than a fleshy foal of brown and emerald.

Coming out of his thoughts as he feels movement about him, he finds the smaller colt poking and prodding at him.  Investigating what makes him metallic versus fleshy he assumes, but the invasion of personal space is unsettling.  A snort flutters from his nostrils as ears flatten to the ridge of his neck, "I am very normal... Now back away."  The earth rumbles below their hooves and soon a iron barrier is emerging from the forest floor.  Jetting up towards the sky, it separates their bodies.

With another snort, he begins to turn back towards where he had come from.  He needed to find his siblings again...
