    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The chaos within his mind seems to mimic the ocean tides, swelling to maximum levels of intensity, only to slowly ebb, leaving calmer waters behind. Today, tranquility dominates his consciousness, so he decides to subject himself to a wandering whim.

As usual, he is not quite sure what he is looking to accomplish, but there is an irresistible urge to stretch his wings and legs that he sees no point in denying. There is still only a hint of elegance to his takeoff, but he manages to launch himself well enough from a standing position today.

The heat of the sunlight mingles favorably with the cooler fingers of air that weave themselves through the strands of his mane and tail, creating a climate he finds quite ideal. For a while, he loses himself to his thoughts as the powerful thrumming of his wings drones in the background.

Most people say that they hate change and prior to this day, Assailant would have agreed with them. True, he had enjoyed the simple routines of his old life, but now he knows that he has never truly abhorred the idea because change had not crossed his path very often. The recent alterations to his life have certainly made him question everything that he is and what he stands for, but he is coming to realize that the discomfort has begun to subside, and he does not mind what is being left in its wake.

His flight sends him south to the river’s delta and he takes some time to soar lazily over the ocean, only mildly surprised to find that he can now appreciate the salty tang that flavors the air here. It was not that long ago that he had escaped his underground incarceration and that same brine had burned his throat and lungs as he swam through its vast depths.

Whether he is ready to admit it or not, it is very likely that that growing fondness correlates directly to the affection blossoming within his core. But he just wants to enjoy his time for now, so he heads for the shore.

As soon as he touches down, he begins loping smoothly through the sand until he reaches firmer ground. Once his muscles feel sufficiently relaxed, he launches into a full-tilt sprint and luxuriates in the deluge of adrenaline that rushes through his veins.

Eventually, he slows a bit, but his high spirits refuse to fade into the background. And so he cavorts through the open space, kicking up his heels every so often like a spry colt. It has been quite some time since he has felt such liberation from his need for control. It is a delicious feeling and he cannot imagine relinquishing it any time soon.

His antics made the ground rattle beneath her resting hooves. She’s beneath a bright fruit tree, she found a grove of them, plump and reddish purple. Filled with little round juicy beads of deliciousness (pomegranates). The trees are short and stocky and filled with the ripe fruits, hence why the kelpie-girl is drawn here. Meats, fruits, veggies, anything scrumptious always deserves her investigations…and this exploratory endeavor turned out to be quite fruitful, wink wink.

And now her peace is a bit shattered, she lazily opens her golden eye and tips her closest ear to the commotion. She stretches, yawning loudly, “Gods-forbid I find a bit of peace anywhere.” she mutters, snapping her slick tail. Her fur is dripping wet, always dripping like she’s emerged from the water  ̶  it's a fun thing she picked up on an adventure, it hasn't gotten annoying yet..but it might just.

“Well hi..”  she says sort of sweet tone, not at all betraying her annoyed nature upon being woken from her slumber. Dried blood and juices from the pomegranates still on her muzzle as she smiles at him.  “Enjoying this nice weather, I see.”  she laughs a little, flicking her golden tail (unbraided today).

Her voice, mellow but with a certain edge, ripples through the air and puts an end to his romp. He had not really intended to draw attention to himself, but its not as though he was being very quiet or discreet in his childish antics.

Coat streaked with evidence of his exertion, he raises his head to search for the voice’s owner. She is easy enough to find in her brown and blue and gold grandeur, so he strides over to her. As he draws near, he takes in the details of her appearance, from the suspicious stains near her mouth to the golden ring bridging her nostrils to the rivulets that fall from every inch of her body.

Odd. She looks as though she has just risen from beneath the water, though there is none in their vicinity. Strange, how water has become such a common theme in this new life of his. From the miles of ocean that tried to prevent his escape from the earth’s bowels, to the fluid wings of the woman that had witnessed his emergence from the sea, to the vast expanse of water that had still covered much of Beqanna when he had returned.

He wonders if the sprites should have given him some sort of water-based gift, instead of the feathered wings at his side and the heavy horn on his head. The thought makes him smile.

    And so does Claudia.

He looks away from her, eyelids falling as he turns his face in the sun’s direction. “Of course.. I’d be a fool to not appreciate such a fine day..” His eyes, glinting with roguishness, find her again. “And a fine lady, as well.”

Claudia comes out of her dappled shadows and into the warm yellow sunlight. Her mane pinned neatly against her finely craned, muscular neck and her heterochromatic eyes flit over him. When his eyes return to hers, ‘fine lady’, he says, and her toothy grin lifts on one side.

Oh my, flattery is always welcome.

She blinks those big hungry eyes, scales replacing her glossy fur like dripping armor. Iridescence glows at their edges, prisms catching them like they’re made of delicate glass. When she speaks, her bright white and very sharp teeth reveal themselves with each dripping word. “What a gentleman.” she purrs, flitting both ears forward and leaning toward him, giving his air a sniff; he smells of nothing too shocking, how dull.

And yet. YET. Something was quite magnetic about looking at him. It was certainly worth wasting a little time in the fruit trees with idle chat, at the very least, and at best…maybe he will prove to be an adventure of any kind.

And where are you from? Such a man of distinguished tastes in weather and women is bound to have something interesting about him  ̶  aside from his looks.” she grins, looking away to the sun reaching across the rolling grasses between them and the horizon.

There is a vague cloud of danger that surrounds the sharp-toothed mare before him, but it does little to dissuade his interest. Though not the type to seek out peril or conflict, he is also not the type to flee when faced with either. Smart? Perhaps not, but like any other fool, he is unlikely to change until something disastrous occurs.

The sunlight glints and shatters as it falls over the newly displayed scales, the razor-edges of her teeth. Not quite blinding, but certainly fetching and tempting all in one. He chuckles somewhat dismissively at her statement.

His years of herd life had taught him many things, and though many of those things are irrelevant to today’s lifestyles, the one bit that endures is his deference toward women. His favorite companion back then had been lethal in more ways than one, and that was before magic and myth were commonplace as they are now. He could only imagine the havoc she could create with today’s abilities.

    “You live and you learn.”

He shifts his weight subtly, though the feathers of his wings ruffle energetically with the pleasure at her compliments. The fact that he is physically attractive has never been lost on him and he still takes advantage of it to this day. From what he’s gathered, his new additions only serve to enhance the illusion.

But, “You’ll find yourself disappointed if you’re looking for something exciting here.”

“I’m from the simple days of Beqanna’s past, where I collected pretty little girls on a small piece of land and thought that made me a real man.”

Where agitation once wrapped his words, amusement now sits in its place, bred of his slow acceptance that he will survive despite the old ways having fallen to the wayside. An impish smile brightens the natural solemnity of his features.

“But surely the lovely lady must have great tales to share, no?”

    Some things never change.
