    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

The last full moon of autumn glows round and bright, illuminating Malik’s path down the mountain side. The moon rises slowly, and the shadow that the dark-haired horse casts is long and sharp on the white snow. The darkness emanates from him, black light glowing from the myriad of stripes along his well-muscled young body. His heart is beating quickly in anticipation, and his bicolored eyes cast about the lake shore in search of a familiar face.

He’d told Vital to meet him here the last time they’d spoken, and he knows that the other colt will come. The pair of them have climbed up and around and over every inch of Hyaline in search of adventure, and Malik thinks it is high time they expand their explorations. Where exactly they will go he is not certain. Perhaps Vital will have some ideas, have come from the world beyond Hyaline.

For all his inquisitive nature, Malik has still rarely ventured farther than the Common Lands and rarely across the River. At first he had been reluctant to leave Myrna, but as his sister grows older and no longer requires constant supervision (and his trust in his mother to watch her grows as well), that barrier melts away.

Something passes between him and the moon, and Malik glances up to see a winged griffin in the star bright sky. The creature does not land, but instead circles overhead, the silver moonlight reflecting from his iridescent black feathers. His companion would not wish to be left behind, Malik knows, but he is no more certain of the griffin’s ability to be unobtrusive than he is of his baby sister’s.

At least Vital will know what he is doing, Malik reminds himself. They’ve been practicing, after all.
