    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

“Off you go and play, Nalani,” Chasity murmurs, nuzzling her daughter gently.

Nalani looks around wildly, at the grassy meadow and the foals playing merrily in the distance, and with a panicked scramble she takes shelter between her mother’s legs.

“But mum,” she whines, looking up at her with wide eyes. “I don’t want to go.”

Nalani has spent the first weeks of her life securely by her mother’s side, who has fast fallen in love with her sweet daughter. They play games together, chasing butterflies and singing with the bluebirds. They nestle in close at night, and Chasity whispers fairytales into her daughter’s ears as she falls asleep. She is her best friend, with whom she shares her soft, brown eyes.

Though she could spend hours watching her child with wide-eyed wonder, Chasity knows she needs to find friends her own age. She steps around the champagne foal, nudging her across the border and into the Playground.

“The fairies are watching over you, remember?” Chasity assures her, perhaps comforting herself as much as her daughter. “And I won’t be far if you need me.”

Nalani takes a deep breath, and with a final desperate glance at her mother, creeps slowly into the Playground.

It is an impossibly large place for a young foal. Nalani looks around curiously, her anxiety cast aside. There is a creek to splash in, and trees all around. She counts a dozen different coloured wildflowers, and fairy rings of red mushrooms peering through the grass. She wishes her mother could have come with her. They would have played hide and seek together, or a game of tag.

She hears the crackle of twigs nearby, and her spindly ears flicker. Someone is coming. Heart racing, she leaps behind a wide old tree and nestles into it, tries to hide herself from the stranger’s view. What would she say to them? What if they make fun of her, or they don’t want to play? She keeps still as possible, steadying her racing breaths. But as her pounding heart settles, she begins to itch with overwhelming curiosity. What if they want to be her friend?

She peers out from behind the tree with trepidation, looking around slowly.

    “Hello?”
