    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

Agetta is trying very hard not to hold on too tightly to the twin girls, so when Beyza asks if she can go to the playground the white mare agrees. It would be good for her, the mother thinks, to explore somewhere outside of Pangea’s rocks and canyons - even though it is tempting to keep her family in that kingdom since it is, as far as she knows, safe.

Beyza herself has no concept of what is or is not safe, she simply has decided she wants to see more. It would not have mattered if she had gone anywhere else in the world, but she could see the grass and trees of the meadow and the playground from the border of Pangea and they had been encouraging her curiosity to grow and grow and grow over the last couple days.

Her mother leaves her at the playground in the early morning light, and though Beyza does not mean to deceive Agetta - her small form soon drifts away from that protected land of only-foals and into the Meadow. Even this early in the day, it is easy to tell that though they are similar, this place will offer more things for her to discover. Sometimes she just likes to stand still and watch and marvel at all the horses and their lives as they shuffle along.

For now, there is nothing remarkable about the girl - aside from the her marble-like figure. Even her eyes are such a pure white that they seem to glow as she wanders slowly, cautiously, and seeks out something new to discover.

She had known almost immediately that there was something different about Agetta’s one daughter. She had gone soon after they were born, and though the twin girls were both white and lovely, there was something strange about the one they named Beyza. When she had looked at her newborn face, still fresh and innocent, she had felt her heart lurch in her chest – the same way it did when she looked at her newborn children. A stolen sideways glance to Anaxarete had confirmed her suspicions, and though she had said nothing, there was a nearly imperceptible shake of her head. She didn’t care what the shadow queen chose to do with her magic – but she was afraid the truth would upset Agetta, and so she kept it to herself.

From where she stands she can see the bright white filly as she wanders across the meadow, and for a moment Ryatah simply watches her, her own figure bathed in the afterglow of the golden sunrise. She debates letting her continue on her way, but she also thinks Agetta wouldn’t be thrilled if she knew she had seen her daughter alone in the meadow and she hadn’t intercepted her.

“Beyza,” she calls to her as she approaches, the autumn sun glinting off her gold-tipped wings. With a smile on her pale lips she draws herself alongside the young girl, reaching out to touch her nose to the top of her neck before asking her, “Does your mother know you’re out here? And where’s your sister?” As if Ryatah has ever kept track of her own children once they outgrew the gangly newborn stage, but, she has always been one of the world’s sweetest hypocrites.

Beyza recognizes Ryatah, though her memory of the day she was born is hazy. But she knows instantly who the mare is, who the angel is, because she had a lasting impression - and because her mom has told her of the friend that came to visit when the twins were born. Ryatah is one of the first faces she had ever seen, and the inspiration for the soft glow that the filly often uses to comfort herself when things are strange (which happens quite a lot, in this world of magic and monsters).

And now, when Ryatah touches her kindly in greeting, a soft white glow surrounds her and tiny white wings sprout from her sides. Beyza does not notice the changes (they are so common for her now) and so she does not think to be embarrassed by the obvious mimicry. What does make her feel a little ashamed are the questions - a girl with a family and yet she is here alone.

“Cali is making new friends.” Beyza comments in a distant voice, though she’s not entirely certain she understands how she knows this. It is as though she can see Caledonia, meeting a colt their age, though her twin is not in the immediate vicinity. The vision dissipates when she refocuses on Ryatah to answer the rest of the question. “My mom doesn’t exactly know though. She thinks I'm at the playground.” Her gaze shifts away at this admission. The idea of lying to her mother makes Beyza’s insides all sort of twisty but, maybe, the arrival of this mare will save her from causing too much distress. “But it's okay if you’re with me, right Ryatah?” And then that crystalline gaze shifts up to the glowing mare - hoping beyond hope that they weren’t going to turn around and march right back.

“I was just so curious.” She says by way of explanation for why she was out here on her own. It’s only now that she thinks either of her parents would have likely gone with her if she had asked, or she could have waited until Cali was with her, but things seemed to have worked out just fine as it was so there was no longer any need to worry.

She notices when the little girl changes; the delicate wings and the glow that is so similar to her own, and her heart flinches inside of her ribcage. Because it is strange to look at something that is so plainly hers, and not be able to lay claim to it. It is not the first time Anaxarete has essentially stolen a child from her, though she supposes in a way this was far less cruel. Beyza was never really hers; not the way Ripley had been. It was hard to miss something she never had, but it doesn’t keep that greedy, selfish part of her from trying to surface.

That part that wants everything and everyone; the part of her that wants to be able to claim this beautiful and brilliant girl as hers, but she can’t.

“You don’t want to make friends, too?” She questions gently, though she isn’t entirely surprised she had found the playground uninteresting. She doesn’t think any of her children have ever gone there; they all seemed to be born into such strange situations that forced them into a psuedo-adulthood, and maybe Beyza was no exception.

“I’m probably the worst chaperone you could have found, but, I’m sure your mother won’t mind.” She touches her nose to her shoulder before stepping off, glancing sideways to make sure she is following. It was early enough that the meadow was still quiet, save for the two strangely similar looking white, winged figures. “What were you curious about? Unfortunately the meadow can be pretty boring,” which is a lie, of course. The meadow was rarely boring, but if Beyza was lucky, it would be a long time before she had to discover that.

Beyza gives the angel’s question about friends serious consideration for a few moments before shrugging those tiny, downy wings at her sides. “I don’t know, I’ve got a couple of friends already. How many do you have?” She wonders what the right number of friends is to have. Her mother only seemed to have one or two and she seemed to be happy enough. And Beyza’s days were filled with practicing her magic with Anaxarete or exploring with Liv. Plus she had Caledonia too, twins were basically built-in friends! She hadn't even considered that maybe she should be making more.

The statement about how Ryatah is probably the worst chaperone causes Beyza’s white nose to wrinkle in confusion, but it flits out of her head when the mare touches her on her shoulder and then moves off. Beyza hesitates for a moment because she felt something with that small touch. A spark of familiarity, a surge of warmth like what she feels when she cuddles up close to her sister to sleep or plays tag with her father.

She doesn’t understand what it means, though, that it feels like she's with family and quickly forgets to consider it when Ryatah looks back and she hurriedly moves to catch up and walk beside her. What was the question? What was she curious about? “Oh everything I suppose! It’s funny to see places that aren’t Pangea. There’s no rocks here! Where do you live? Are there lots of rocks there too or is it - kinda green like this place?” As far as Beyza knew, those were the only two possibilities as far as what a place could look like.
