    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    winter wonderland

The male is quite comfortable for the moment, the many feelings that rushed to his head each day, aching in his brain, washed over by a calm cloud, his doubts calmed by the soothing speech between companions, an enjoyable sensation that wavered in the grand sense of time.
While time may be short, the white male still believes you can make it longer, create a reality within a broken universe in which everything is at peace, which was not always the case, especially back home when he was outside of Beqanna. At this time the male was rather distanced, a place where he was shaped into an un-social creature, someone who could not wear a smile on his face, for no particular reasons at all.
But with the sweet touch of his companion, brushing up against his cold legs, giving him the confidence to speak up. He turns to the mare with a smile "Well, I don't particularly have an interesting past, it was outside of Beqanna" the stallion started "I was raised quite strictly, nothing too hideous but nothing that soothed my inner self, as to dreams. Well, I wish to become someone someday, I'm not sure who that is, but I will find it sometime in the future" he adds as he looks away, his smile dropping slightly.

"As to nightmares" he refrains for a moment before answering her question "I'm afraid one day I will wake up and everyone will be gone, or that I would lose my speech, as non existent as it is anyway" he mentions, he didn't socialise much, that was true, but for whatever reason he felt like he could open up today, allow anyone to delve deep and dive into his mindful soul, searching for his long lost clues to unravel a mystery "Its kind of weird I guess" he adds as he laughs with a hint of awkwardness.

What he had said was true, Ruinam was not one to be dishonest, his mind spoke the truth at all times, he was afraid to lose others, perhaps that was the reason that fueled his inability to socialise, something he desperately tried to work on at all times.

The air is silent once again, no movement apart from the small white critter lurking beneath Ruinam's shadow, hiding from the light.
The stallion turns to the mare again "How about yourself?" he says with a smile, his mood changing constantly.

how come I never got used to the feeling of sleeping in a cage?
too long driving, too damn hungry; a tied-up hound but nothing stays

Ruinam confesses that he’s an outsider, his blood borne from a world beyond Beqanna’s influence. ”That’s already interesting,” she croons with narrowed eyes, inching a step closer to him as though expecting telltale signs of his alienism to this land. Nothing stands out, of course, not even a scar that would elicit questioning. Like many others, Ruinam fits within a normal spectrum. Actually, his uniqueness stems from the plainness of his face and body. Her family has wings, scales, and teeth. She, herself, has frost that beautifully catches and reflects the sunlight, wings, and metallic locks that ripple when she moves. As of late, she has discovered, claws occasionally take the place of her hooves. An oddity, really, and not yet one she is comfortable to admit.

But it doesn’t deter her, his normalcy. In fact, it lures her deeper into the pools of his eyes as they look down at his companion, then the trees, then her. His descriptions and confessions spark a deep intrigue that resonates through her core. His openness soothes her previous worries that he may turn on her. Ruinam unfolds in front of her in a way her own twin hadn’t. It gives birth to something in her chest, a comfort and realization that keeps her rooted in his company and not wander.

”Not weird at all,” she murmurs beneath the sunlight dappling through the trees, her eyes steadily on him, softening. ”I won’t leave you.” The words fall like water past her tongue, unable to be held back, but as peculiar as it is, Valdis doesn’t regret what she said. The reassurance dwells in the small space between them. She does still consider what she said, wondering if somehow the world will rip them apart and leave her reassurance bleeding and worthless. And so she doesn’t make it a promise, leaving it as a hope that life will keep them harbored at each other’s side as both friends and family in Sylva’s overshadowing embrace.

For a long moment, Valdis broods on his rebuttal. It had been so easy to ask him, but with the focus returned on her, she hesitates. Ideas slither across her mind as she makes desperate attempts to grope the most appropriate. Alas, she suddenly realizes how uncertain she actually is.

Swallowing past her bewilderment, answers finally trickle to her lips, tickling them in reservation as she weighs them first before speaking. ”To step out of my mother’s shadow,” she admits, almost with a grimace furrowing her brow. ”She’s done a lot in her life already, and continues to do so. I don’t want to be just her daughter. I want my own name to have a meaning, a reputation.” Solace, she doesn’t add, is the mother that comes to mind, not Kagerus. To step out from beneath the Caretaker would be a highlight in her life, but she is still so young with so much time ahead of her. ”But I feel failure in the process.” Is that cliché for a nightmare? Is that an expected answer? She supposes everyone is afraid of it, but they still take leaps of faith. She, on the other hand, keeps alternative options on hand in case her primary plan falls apart. That can almost be perceived as cowardice, but she doesn’t mention that to him, not yet.

    winter wonderland

The feeling of intrigue only deepens as he listens to the mare, a distraction from his usual leaden lifestyle.
She brings a new type of fascination with her as she speaks, the white stallion savouring her every word, a relaxing victory for his own need to socialise, her whisper silently driven toward them as the air cools, the moon slowly beginning to rise, casting a sharp light that beamed down on the pair.
She assures him that she will not leave him, Ruinam's head turning to face the mare with an inquisitive look, a rather bold statement he had never heard anyone say, a sweet symphony arriving at his ears, a smile spreading to his pink lips as he speaks in return "I'm glad" his words are hushed but his tone rises with significance as the mare continues to speak, the ivory stallion's head turning back toward the vast expanse of dimly lit forest.

Knowing that he was next to someone who wouldn't abandon him made the stallion feel safe and secure, his fox friend swooping her inbetween the pair in search of prey, his small stomach grumbling thunderously.
It had been a while since Ruinam had had proper company, the only beings he had met in the past months were those of Sylvian origin, no one outside seemed to invite him to converse, or even note of his presence, which was mainly why he focused on becoming the bystander. Watching life unfold around him as he stepped aside, his own being resorting to finding peace, find balance in the earth that he could follow, an impossible task.

Shortly after her declaration of staying with the stallion the mare begins to speak of her own ambitions and fears. Ruinam turns to face her as she speaks, his eyes following her lips as they moved in speech, his mind following as his fox yipped in the distance, announcing his catch, the smell of blood quickly entering the scene. Ruinam didn't pay particular attention to it, he was more focused on listening to the mare as she spoke of her aspirations and her fears.
She speaks of creating a name for herself, the resonating silence within him breaking loose as she makes a mention of it, for a while Ruinam meant nothing to him, just a word that he could be identified by if need be, but over the years the stallion began to make his name worth saying, something he could understand as the mare spoke.

The stallion nods as she speaks of her fear, something the stallion could understand in some aspects "Failure can only overtake you if you allow it." he looks back out toward the lake as the moon raises the light around them "When you fall, you still have the option to stand back up, even if that you must crawl toward your goal" he smiles, a rather generic old and whiny thing to say at the time, but he felt like it made sense to say out loud right now, since she had assured him, he could return the favour, his loyalty toward another always a priority for him "Plus, you can count on me if you need me, Valdis" he smiles as he turns back toward the mare, his head tilted as he keeps his eyes closed for a moment, relaxing in the brief silence of it all as it overcame them both.

Nothing could overpower the promise of loyalty, the only thing that is able to break bonds between chains is dishonesty itself. After all, where dishonesty falls, things tend to burn.

There’s an odd sense of relief when Ruinam reciprocates the offer, reassuring that his shoulder will be there for her during her endeavors. A honeyed smile brightens her pretty face, retiring the smug expression that she most often adorns. ”Thanks. That’s sweet of you,” her gut tells her to reach forward and touch him, to solidify her loyalty with a tender caress of her lips, but Valdis doesn’t move. It’s what she has always seen mother do, and yet the idea of touching a man – someone other than family – unsettles her. So, she quietly nods and takes to heart what he says.

”You’re a wise one,” she comments, her tone gentle but in humor as her gaze swiftly traces along him before darting toward the shadows in response to hearing the fox chirp in victory. Such a fascinating thing to have a companion. It would spare her from loneliness, but there are days that she savors the solitude and loses herself in the storm of her thoughts. Ever ambitious, she needs time alone and away from the herd. With her blue eyes trained on the forest, Valdis considers what it is to have a companion like Ruinam, but the recent voices that have creeped into her mind dismiss the idea. There’s enough rolling around in her thoughts. She doesn’t need a shadow among other things.

A deep breath expands her lungs. It’s warm with the changing seasons. With so much needing done, she contemplates her next moves before turning her head to look at Ruinam again. ”You have a great deal of wisdom, my friend,” she tastes the word on her tongue, playing with it uncertainly despite the grin broadening. ”I’ll take it to heart.” And she actually will, because he was right in what he advised. Rolling her shoulders, Valdis brings to life the leaves and tree trunks around them as they glitter from the light reflecting from the frost across her skin. ”But I must go and finish some business,” her business, in reality, is Sinner and learning methods to climb the ranks. With a nod of her head, still warring herself whether to touch him, she concludes with, ”I’ll see you soon?”

Of course she will. They are friends. They are comrades.
