    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

She was sad. It had been days since her mom had left her. Those days had turned into weeks, and then into months. The fairies had helped her with the passing of the time. They had taught her other things too, but this was what she knew most. Another day would pass, another turning of the sun and moon and she was still here. And her momma was still gone and hadn’t come back. She held out a small kernel of hope, hoped that her momma was going to come back.

But it had been so long.

She smiled a bit at the faerie as she talked to her, worked on getting her to talk back. Star hadn’t talked or cried since that first night, when she realized that she had been left alone, twice. She didn’t know what had pulled the other mare away from her, but it had been something.

“Come on sweetie, say something.” Star just smiled a small sad smile and shook her head slightly. Her lips brushing against the small branch near her face, lips wrapping around the branch before she tugged it free. She tossed her head with it, prancing away quickly. She heard the soft sigh of the faerie but she didn’t acknowledge it, just kept on going just a little while longer.

for every tyrant, a tear for the vulnerable
in every lost soul, the bones of a miracle

There would a baby soon. Maybe. The possibility alone made her too excited for words. She wants to gush about this to Litotes, but doesn’t want to get his hopes up until she knows for sure. If there is to be disappointment let it be hers alone. Still the idea of a child puts her in mind of children constantly. She all but sneaks out of Hyaline to lurk along the edge of the playground to see the very young playing  in the safety of that place. Then, feeling a bit like a stalker she moves on, thinking maybe she’ll loop around the common lands before heading home, her heart so full of hope even as the despair of uncertainty weedles at her.

The den is south of the playground. She has never visited before, and crosses the threshold cautiously. It is a quiet place, there are fairies here and that makes her cautious, even though she doesn’t see any of them. What Kensa does see, is a girl of about a year prancing through the autumn foliage with a thin branch in her mouth. She is spotted a unique and vibrant orange, her short mane and tail equally bright. The chestnut mare walks slowly closer, dropping her head a little and following the youngster with wide, soft topaz eyes. An ancient instinct makes her whicker to draw the girl’s attention before she realizes what she is doing, but she is drawn to the lone spotted girl.

“Hello darling.” Her voice is silvery and kind, her flaxen mane falling over her blazed face as she stretches her neck, extending her muzzle toward the stick toting youth.

She had paused, unaware of how close to the edges of the Den she had come. Or perhaps aware but not willing to acknowledge it. She had been to the Playground, or rather come close to going. But she hadn’t been able to go down with all those other kids to hear about their lives with their families. She hadn’t wanted too, and had balked against the fairies urging to getting her to go. So she hadn’t. They had stopped urging her to play with others when there had been tiny bleats of distress coming from her lips at their urging.

But now she was alone, the way she preferred it honestly. She could learn all she needed to later, for now, she would much rather be-.

The soft whickering disturbed her very serious talk with herself. Just when she had been sure this was what she wanted, she felt her heart start to thump in nervousness in her chest. It was loud, surely even the mare could hear it, it was so loud. She stills, her ears flickering with uncertainty before she turns to look.

She was there, she was real and she was talking to her. She blinks, the stick dropping from her lips. The mare’s lips stretching forwards and she hesitantly stretches her own out. She inhales the scent of...well she’s not sure what because she hasn’t left the Den. But there’s what she imagines is happiness, and a smell that is particularly the mare’s own. She steps a hesitant step forwards, nostrils still flaring. She doesn’t speak, hasn’t. Hasn’t felt the urge to since that first day, but she is closer, she is curious.

And above all she feels the hope spring to life beneath her ribcage.

Hope is a great sweet and full feeling, one that she has been carrying around with her for days always edged with a little apprehension. Now that feeling flares to life again but the apprehension has died out of it. Kensa’s eyes are full of the sight of the girl turning towards her, of her earnest surprise and curiosity. They meet and breathe one another in for the first. Fairies watch from deeper within the den, grim and contented but Kensa has forgotten them and they fade into the trees and earth like they were never there at all.

“My name is Kensa. What’s yours?” There is a too long pause, and she adds very gently, genuinely… “I’d very much like to know.” She would like so much more than that. She knows the girl is here because someone left her behind, because that is the purpose of this place. Its other purpose is one that Kensa had not before considered taking part in (though for no other reason than it had failed to occur to her) but of course she is drawn here at the most perfect time.

Whether the girls reply comes slowly or quickly Kensa is not inclined to let silence linger too long. She drags her eyes away from the girl to look slowly around the quiet den. It's a pretty place, softened and sheltered in comparison to the rest of Beqanna. “Do you like it here?” She asks the child, meanwhile wondering if she would prefer Hyaline, not as safe or sheltered but miraculously beautiful and hopefully to be full again with youngsters one day soon.

She wants to tell her right away, she really does. But the words stick in her throat, unable to let go of that last little bit of fear that she will be left behind...again. So she does not, the words choking her. But the mare continues, unperturbed by how she says nothing. That feeling of hope flares to life brighter inside her chest, almost burning her with its intensity. The mare takes a long look around and then asks her another question.

This one she can answer almost right away. She thinks about it and shrugs at first. She turns to look over her shoulder at the fairies that only looked grim when they were watching the interaction between adult and child. She had seen it only a few times before. But when she made eye contact with the one that she had been talking with, she smiles, her entire face softening. With an encouraging nod the fairy waves her hand towards Kensa before she disappears from view.

Astarielle turns to look back at the mare. She takes a long considering look, before her raspy voice slides uneasily from her lips. “Won’t leave me behind again? Take me with you?” She questions, tilting her head to look at her warily. Too bold perhaps. The open look on her face shifting into wariness, into that instance look of the filly protecting herself, protecting her heart from the hope that threatened to swallow her whole. She could live through not getting picked again, but it would hurt. Her trust would be broken and it would take everyone a long time to get through the wall she would build.

But speaking of what-ifs doesn’t change the right now. She waits, saying nothing else until Kensa answers her question.

She watches as the girl looks around the den. The filly’s brown eyes are off of Kensa and the mare feels her own hope beginning to be strangled by weeds of doubt. Perhaps she does like it here, enjoys the company of the fae and the certain safety of the den. Normally Kensa enjoys the unknown but she could do without this kind of mystery, the waiting to be rejected herself when suddenly she was found her heart set on this dear one, on the motherhood she is so eager for.

There are tears that try to spring to her eyes when the spotted filly finally speaks with a voice rusty from lack of use. Kensa’s hope flares to life again with a fire that almost makes her nauseous (or perhaps that is the beginnings of something else, but no matter). Once the words are out the brave and open face begins to close, suspicion a dark cloud around the girl. Kensa has blinked away her over-eager tears, not wanting to seem too emotional but her heart does break for the child and she lowers her head a little more. “I won't leave you behind.” The chestnut mare steps closer, reaching out to embrace the filly if she will allow her, pull her close to her chest and drop her head over her small shoulder. Embracing the girl, or not, Kensa says only, “Come home to Hyaline. You will have me. You will have a father and a family. You can learn and play and grow and never come back here unless you want to.” Pulling back then, Kensa tilts her head a bit, her smile hoping to coax one from the filly. “What do you think?”

It has been since her birth since she was last felt the touch of her mother. She sighs when the mare pulls her close, after speaking the words she had been longing for. Star nuzzles close to her, pressing her small body against the mare’s larger one and inhaling the scent that was completely unique to Kensa. She keeps talking, and it makes her a little nervous to go from such a small family of one, to a much larger family of who knows how many.

But Star only nods, her face breaking out into a grin that lights her whole face. And uncontrolled burst of color changing rapidly changes her colors until it settles back onto her natural one. “Astarielle.” She says almost shyly this time, not noticing her ability. “My other named me Astarielle.”

Other being her birth mother. “Take me home now?” Her voice grew rapidly smoother the longer she used it, even if her language skills required a bit of refining. Where ever Kensa went she would follow.

( @[Kensa] So this is crap, but I figure we could move it along to Hyaline. I’ll let you post first this time Wink )
