Darkling

There is something approaching ethereal in the sight of the golden unicorn standing amongst the shadows, faint dapples of light shimmering across the summer-bright skin and elegant twists of his horn. Yet, it is a lie, the thin veneer of a young girl’s fairytale poorly masking the beast beneath it.

For that is what Darkling has become, a beast. In so many ways, he has changed little. In many more ways, however, he has become the creature he was always meant to be. Still, one could not see it simply from looking at him. After all, who would imagine such an innocuous vision could hide even more unimaginable depths?

As he steps forward, a small creature leaps from the branches overhead, small hands gripping the flaxen strands of his mane as it scrambles forward. It stills between golden ears that flick occasionally, prehensile tail curling forward to wrap around the horn.

Darkling does not react to the small primate, disregarding its actions with the practiced ease of familiarity. The only sign he is even aware of the shadow creature’s actions is the slight twitch of his mouth. A simple action that betrays his affection for his oldest and most favored creation. It makes no sound, gives no indication of life, or even of its existence beyond the fact those with sight could undeniably behold a void-dark outline and glaring yellow eyes.

This is an undeniable boon. After all, anyone who could perceive its existence beyond sight would quickly learn why this would be such an undesirable outcome.

An army could lurk in those shadows with none the wiser of its existence, commanded by a capricious general who holds no allegiance and possesses only a twisted sense of morality. Perhaps it is fortunate, then, that Darkling contains little desire to command, much less lead. He seeks only that which will draw his mirth and sate his fickle desires.

And, as it turns out, he is on the hunt.

As the afternoon sun peaked in the sky, Alicent finally had to admit defeat.

Water dripped in glistening rivulets down her skin, the remnants of what had once been her frost scales. She could mostly tolerate that; she could even tolerate the vague irritability that came with being in the heat for too long (that was more so an issue for those around her). But once black began to spot her vision and the rapid rhythm of her heart caused her knees to feel weak, she knew it was time to retreat to the forest.

Reluctantly, she stepped out of where she had been standing knee-deep in the river; not even the cool current coursing around her was enough to abate the heat in the summer sun. Though she had not inherited her mother’s kelpie-like qualities, she still gave the impression of something that had emerged directly from the sea. Seashells lay tangled into the thick, cascading waves of her golden mane and tail, with the pastel colors of sea lavender twisting into the strands, and from her forehead spirals a horn made of seaglass. She may not be a kelpie, but she still looked a little out of place as she walked herself into the long shadows of the forest.

The coolness of the shade brought almost immediate relief, and the further she walked the more her frost scales began to reform, glinting in the dappled light above. The forest was beautiful in its own way, though it was not the beach, or even the river. She could appreciate the beauty of the golden strands of sunshine beaming through the leaves of the trees, the smell of slightly damp dirt, and chorus of birdsong happening above her head, but she still found herself wishing that she had headed towards the coastline instead.

Around a slight bend in the forest trail, she notices the golden stallion shrouded in shadow, alone. When she allows herself to take a full look at him—not at all coy in the way she does so, but instead stopping and holding him fast in her gaze, her head tilting almost appraisingly—she decides that he is handsome enough to garner her curiosity. “Hello,” she says, stopping what is hopefully a respectable distance. As someone that has been born into a land ripe with magic with none of her own—she is only a pretty thing, not so much a physically powerful one—she has learned to exercise at least some caution with strangers. It is only once she is close enough, though, that she notices the shifting of shadows clutching to him, and a pair of golden eyes. “Oh. You have a friend, I see. Hopefully I’m not interrupting.”

Darkling

He is aware of her, slipping through the trees. She is not subtle, though he is hardly one to judge. Yet he does not pay her any heed. Not until she speaks, at least, her voice breaking the faint sound of wind whispering between the leaves, nearly lost beneath the trill of many birds and hum of insects. He snorts, his gaze jumping to her as though she had interrupted him.

His dark eyes bore into the stranger, something that could almost be described as sinister flashing before disappearing behind an intense sort of interest. He tilts his head, the silence stretching as he stares at her. The yellow eyes of his companion remain on her, unblinking, fixed in the way of something feral.

Still silent, Darkling steps forward, his own curiosity now piqued, just as hers had been. He does not care for the ephemeral lines of politeness. He is not a respectable creature, nor has he ever attempted to be one. Perhaps he would offend her, perhaps not. He doesn’t particularly care either way. In truth, when he once more stills, he is far closer than any stranger should be. Uncomfortably so, if such things matter.

His eyes flick over her, tracing something on her body. She is pretty, of course. Only a fool or a blind man would be oblivious to it, but it is not her beauty that draws his attention. His gaze only returns to hers when a large, dark shape detaches itself from the shadows behind her, slipping past her in eerie silence, close enough to touch her legs if she did not shy from it. When it reaches Darkling, it slithers between his legs, curling around behind him to face her, another set of unblinking yellow eyes fixed on her.

“You’re melting, princess,” he finally says, the corners of his lips twitching into a faint smirk. “But you’re not interrupting.”
