a glow - Random Event - 11-02-2024

Winter wreaks havoc on the Forest. The snow-covered trees show hints of yellows and reds, but the light of dusk doesn’t quite reach the ground. Animal tracks dot the snow — some recognizable: deer, foxes. Others not so.
Then, at the edge of the Forest, peeking through the dense trees, is a light. An orb. Still for a moment, and then dancing. One orb turns into two, dancing, swirling, taunting. Catch me if you can.

First come, first serve for the first two characters to reply. Must be a “real” post catching an orb but no word minimums.

He hates winter. It’s always harder to move, to pull at the magic at his core. For the most part, he typically allows his body to simply go ‘inert’ and wait for spring, much like the trees around him. But a troublesome brightness disturbs him and he gives a soft grunt, agitated to be awoken during these otherwise peaceful hours. Slowly, his eyes flutter open and he lifts his chin to watch the orbs split and dance. A low, lazy hiss escapes his jaws then. When this does not shoo them away, he gives his dark head a shake, sending the snow drifting from his body.

Long, spindly legs carry him closer. Every step is sluggish, as if weighted, but he gradually picks up his pace. A vine drags upward from his spine and swipes at the air in a clumsy attempt to snatch the closest orb toward him. As it dances away, he swears that it giggles and mocks him. Wilt gives a rasping whine and a second vine pulls free from his body. Minutes turn to hours, filled with growing sounds of frustration until he’s outright yowling.

Then, at last, he feels his appendage knock the strange thing to the ground. The other vine shoots forward, thankfully warmed from all this chasing, and closes around it firmly.

Winter is fierce, but so is the she-fox that slips among the trees. Fur fluffed against the cold, she looks like a galaxy come to life herself, her lavender eyes shimmering as she follows a nearly indiscernable scent trail, her paws so light on the snow that they don’t even crack the surface.

It's a split-second decision that has Folklore turn from her prey, and as she does she sees a bright flash of light ahead - a will o' wisp? Curious, she bolts forward, past thoughts forgotten as playful desire takes over. She doesn't notice the other nearby as she leaps towards the nearest orb, paws wrapping carefully around it as she tackles it to the ground, mewing in delight.

(did i need an excuse? yes)
