Gale
run away with me--
lost souls and reverie

running wild and running free

Though he is reluctant to leave behind his newest friend, Gale moves quickly once he is airborne over the River.

Beqanna stretches below him. First he crosses the Forest, the bare branches of the trees reaching up into the cold winter sky. Then the red hills and ridges of Loess, though he spares them not a glance, then the autumn-colored expanse of Sylva. He finally begins to feel warm again while soaring over the green jungles of Tephra, and when he arrives  on the black sand beach of his humid home he takes a deep breath of humid air with a happy whicker. Perhaps if Eyas is nearby, she might hear and join him, but for now he is content to work alone. Gale knows he has quite some time – crossing the expanse of Beqanna on foot will surely take hours – and so he has time to prepare.

First he forages through the brightly colored flora, brushing aside the orange-leaf palm and the blue and lavender grass as he searches. He works carefully, piling his finds on a flat bit of rock above the tidewaters. Then he follows Erne on a loop around the island, knowing that by the time he returns Chemdog is likely to be arriving. The brindle stallion settles in to wait, not far from the rock, his bright blue eyes on the distant Tephran shore. That is where Chemdog will appear, he knows, but the afternoon sun is fading and Gale’s eyes cannot see all the way across the water. Instead he uses Erne, the osprey soaring high over the water, sharing his sharp sight with the pegasus down below on the beach.

Erne is not certain why Gale has gathered all the fruit, but he is not inclined to care. He had tried one of the grapples at his heartfriend’s insistence, but it had been terrible. He has no interest in sampling the mango, plum, or the many dates either, and not simply because they all had teeth marks from where Gale has carried them. No, Erne would prefer a fish any day, and he alternates between watching for Gale’s visitor and the sea.
