these are the days i will remember; luath - kildare - 08-06-2019

He hadn't known there would be a price to pay for entering Beqanna. He had known that he would have to bid his parents goodbye and that he would have to wish his younger siblings well. Perhaps it's because he is still so young and still doesn't understand the finality of it all but these are the things that Kildare had accepted as a kind of 'toll' into adulthood (or at least what he perceives as maturity. At his wise and knowing two years of age, he likes to think he is pretty much an adult).

Kildare had paid his price.

He left Beyond behind him and had turned his emerald eyes to what laid beyond the mountains that barricaded them from the outside world. Kildare left home and had earned Astana, for whatever reason, as a traveling companion for all his troubles. The yearling liked to talk. She had filled Kildare's head with some mysterious thoughts, some rather perplexing ones and when his mind couldn't handle more probabilities, he let the little girl continue to dream and wonder beside him while he tuned her out. And then as soon as they arrived in Beqanna, the little girl had fluttered off, letting a lone breeze take her wherever it was that little girls go.

The fact that she vanishes from him so uneasily is the thing that unsettles him most. Some Guardian he was to let his first damsel in distress skip away from him. The thought irritates him and makes him look uncharacteristically grumpy, the solemn expression on his face almost a mirror to serious, sober Tarian. Had he been able to see his expression, he would have remedied it immediately. While he adores his older twin brothers, he has no wish to be seen as austere like his eldest brother or flippant like the other. No, Kildare only wishes to be seen as himself and he thinks that he might have a better chance of achieving that in a place like Beqanna.

But finally, after what has felt like eons, the darkling boy hears the roll of the tide as it comes and goes, crashing rhythmically on the coast. It's funny. He hasn't grown up near the ocean and he had been born in a place far from it, in a place where the peaks of mountains loomed around him. Kildare feels a draw to this place, to the water and its tempo. When the land finally gives way to a beach and the earth beneath his hooves softens, he finds himself glad to finally be here. He stops, taking a moment to survey the beach around him.  An ocean breeze tugs at his midnight mane and sways his tail and then Kildare grins, a greeting for an old friend. He can't command her like before and he feels almost naked without his ability to control the air current around him.

But for now, he lets the breeze tussle his forelock like an affectionate friend and he strolls into the coming waves, letting them lap around his ankles as he welcomes the coming tide.

@[Luath] I'm horrible at starters but hope this was okay!

this would be a fantastic place to put a future quote

When you live in the water, you become attuned to the nuance of the natural currents. Being aware of the currents, he is also aware of when those in his vicinity are disturbed. Usually, that means prey. He doesn't even always need to see the fish and sea creatures anymore to hunt, sometimes just the water movement is enough. Still, his eyes snap open in anticipation when the seagrass around him moves and he darts forward, mouth spread open with bright teeth shining.

It's a good thing he did open his eyes, and sees the hooves attached to dark legs and diverts his lunge. The kelpie is fast, and he aborts his lunge back into deep water, frustrated by the denial. Instead, he snaps up a bright fish that flashes past his face and munches it, taking solace in the crunch of scales in his teeth. Only them, he feels steadier and a thread of guilt worms its way in at almost attacking another equine. Moving much slower, Luthe swims upwards; his ear tips crest the waves first, then eyes, then his entire face as the tide the boy is admiring carries the red-and-blue colt towards the stranger. He doesn't smile, but schools his face into at least a friendly expression. "Hi," he notes that the other is about his age, and thinks maybe he just might make a friend today. "I'm Luath. Are you new here?"

The sea is such a wild and untameable thing to Kildare. He still doesn't know about the pull of the tides or the mighty crash of waves as they break upon the shore. He doesn't know about what lurks in the depths below or what type of creatures call it home. A Kraken or Kelpie might as well be the same thing to the ebony colt. He has no knowledge of either. They are as foreign to him as the sheer size of the ocean that ebbs and flows around his ankles. He has no comprehension of it but the expression on Kildare's face is touched with awe.

He knows that whatever this pull he feels is an ancient and powerful one.

Kildare has felt this way before. He has felt in the sheer enormity of the mountains around him as they reach towards the heavens, capped with snow and inviting the colt to explore their views. He knows what it feels like to be at the very top of this world but this place, this beach inspires a whole new view and another type of magnitude altogether. It steals his words and inspires him to new heights.

While he marvels at the ocean, he still casts a wary glance every now and again on the waves as they continue to propel past him. He might not know about the creatures who dwell in such a place but he isn't ignorant to the fact that something could very easily exist beneath the ocean swell. And behold, his suspicions are confirmed when the Kelpie colt emerges. His emerald eyes widen momentarily but then take in Luath, acknowledging that there is something of his kind in this stranger. Kildare takes a step back but it is more to observe this other colt than fear and his head tilts to the side, deciding on something.

"Hi," Kildare responds back, his mind made up. "And yea, I'm new here." He manages to take a step forward, curious about Luath. "Have you always been here?"

The stranger steps back, a good first instinct really. Luath stands his ground, though, encouraged by the fact that the colt doesn’t actually flee. It bolsters his confidence, and he pricks his red ears forwards, hoping that at least his eyes don’t show his longing for the contact to continue. It would ruin any chance he has of playing it cool if they do. That’s one thing the ocean doesn’t have – an abundance of friends.

“I was born here,” he responds, a sweeping glance taking in the shores and the trees beyond, the only land-home he’s ever known. The water is different, the way it connects to all of the different shores; perhaps that’s why he is drawn to stay submerged more than walk on land. Or, maybe it’s because it’s easy to hide his predatory nature under the waves. Eating bunny rabbits and cute little birds doesn’t make him a lot of friends, but nobody can see him devouring the aquatic life. “What’s your name?”

He waits a moment, for a response, and then offers in an uncharacteristically hesitant manner: “I could, um, show you around. If you want.”

Kildare continues to study the kelpie colt, from the brilliant red hue of his pricked ears to the marvelous array of the blues and red as they melt together to decorate Luath’s coat. Kildare doesn’t usually take notice of such things but he’d be blind to not be intrigued by whatever spectacular creature Luath is. It piques the boy interest further what other unknown and whimsical creatures dwell from the ocean below.

The other colt speaks again and casts a look that encompasses the entire beach and the trees beyond it. Kildare’s green eyes follow and he turns his head away from Luath to take in the view. How vastly different this place was from where he had been born, his snow-peaked and jagged mountains. All that open sky.

But the air here is sweet in its way. (The salt that tangs it is something that he will have to get used too but Kildare is finding easier to ignore it the longer he is here.)

Luath asks him his name and Kildare returns his attention to the kelpie. ”Kildare,” and the colt dips his head to formalize the greeting. ”What about you?” The sound of the incoming tide causes an ear to flick in the direction of the waves but the colt keeps his concentration on Luath. How gawk-eyed he must seem to the beach native, he thinks. An image of doe-eyed Mina comes into his mind, all expectant silence and questions before he can chase the thought away.

”I’ve never seen a beach this.. big before,” he adds, though the excuse feels lame. ”The tide was low and I was able to walk here..” How pastoral he sounds, the boy from the mountains encountering the enormity of the ocean for the first time. Luath gives a tentative offer to show him around and Kildare tosses the idea around in his mind. ”Yea?” he broaches, not wanting to impose on his new seafaring companion. ”If you have a minute, that would be awesome.”
