Time felt like it was changing quickly. Everything felt like it was happening in a hurry. Newton and Sahm could not keep up with the furious chatter that was now cluttering the air around them. Newton wanted it all to stop. He wanted the discussions to dissolve. Sahm could tell that Newton was suffering, but he was helpless. Sahm could not numb his ears. He could not take Newton away from it all and secure him in silence. All the horses were together. All the horses were broken. Sahm didn’t care about everyone else though. He only cared for his Newton who was now needlessly suffering.
After a conversation or two Sahm took Newton to rest beneath a tree. It’s branches hung over them and acted like a shield. Sahm consoled Newton within their make shift fort. ”Your family is okay…no one seems to have gotten hurt.” Sahm said optimistically. Newton merely nodded and provided Sahm with a hint of a smile. Newton curled his head under Sahm’s and closed his eyes. As the bay stallion attempted to sleep Newton kept himself awake by horse watching. Sahm made up miniature stories in his head about all the mares and stallions. He imagined one darker mare had been a valley member who once could turn herself into a chicken. Another speckled stallion once had the power to make armor. It was all in good fun until his eyes passed by Ellyse.
Sahm’s face brightened at the presence of a recognizable horse. Slowly Sahm nudged Newton. ”I promise I’ll be right back.” Sahm said, and Newton merely groaned back.
”Ellyse! Sahm shouted in a hushed tone as he headed in her direction. ”You okay?”
