Being born into a small herd of one stallion and three mares, the group disbanded after a winter passed in which many wolves and wildcats faced a famine, causing them to hunt wild horses. Every member of Astara's herd was lost to these attacks, until only Astara and her mother remained. They became separated one night, however, and both fled in opposite directions from an adamant pack of wolves. By dawn, an exhausted Astara returned to the spot her mother had been, but was unable to find her. Believing she is still alive, Astara has wandered through many lands, searching to reunited with her once again.
