    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    - THE TIDE IS HIGH, IT'S SINK OR SWIM -

The sea mare lounged on the beach, sand warm beneath her and sun warm above. Her legs rested within reach of the lapping waves. It was a welcome counterpoint to the heat, cooling the scales that netted her limbs. She was bruised and sore and satisfied, every inch of her content with the day.

Pteron had left not long ago, and she bid him farewell with the promise that she would visit soon. She had visited Taiga in the cold, and she was certain it must be that much prettier when she wasn't focused on staying warm. Their relationship was not destined to be an easy one, but it seemed that it would exist anyway. They had their own lives, their own responsibilities, their own worlds. That they should tryst every so often seemed a fitting way of keeping them close, if only for small moments. They were small moments she was fast finding herself anticipating.

The wound behind her withers twinged with saltwater drying in it. It was a reminder of something she'd rather not think about. A new layer of complication. She was no quick healer, had no talent for illusion beyond being prettier than she ought to be. That mark where teeth had sunk was more than the bruises that had lead up to it, and it was a mark she'd wear for a long time.

The scales were broken and dislodged and she knew when they grew back they'd likely not look quite as they had before. A sigh broke through her contented expression. Damn him, for making things complicated. She hoped she'd at least have time to let things heal a bit before seeing her family again, but knew her luck was rarely so good. It was an island, after all.
