    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Demetyr

The river was beautiful! Bathed in muted wintery light and dressed in white, the light reflected off the surfaces dreamily. Even the trees, with spirals of ice dangling from their branches her heart raced at the absolute beauty that surrounded her. The river, tightly lidded by ice, was completely silenced - with evidence of life hidden beneath its surface. Come spring, those creatures that called the water its home would be liberated and new life would be brought into the world. Though she delighted in the freshness of a new season, she enjoyed the present cool air that surrounded her. It was not like the filly to be discontent and a gentle smile wove its way upon her features as she ventured nearer to what would have been the river's bank.

Demetyr liked the new land she had chosen as her home. It was comfortable in its simplicity and wholly uncomplicated at its core. Not yet having had the opportunity to explore the many kingdoms that made up its vast majority, the young mare was not yet ready to submit herself to such challenges. She was naught but a young soul only now beginning to venture into the responsibilities of adulthood. Clinging to the carefree nature of her childhood, she was gleefully determined to wander aimlessly before settling on one particular kingdom.

Lowering her head to the ice, she sniffed deeply only to pull away with a sneeze. Giggling at her own antics she caught sight of a bird-watching her from its perch just above. Meeting its black beady eyes, she took a step nearer and hummed a tune. Tilting its head, the bluebird repeated the melody before flying away. Demetyr watched it as it disappeared into the surrounding trees. Alone once more, she exhaled. That was one difference that she was finding difficulty adjusting to. The loneliness. She longed to find her people - to have a family of her own creation. The happiness of her parent's had inspired her to want the same for herself, even if some would consider her to be far too young for such desires.

Around every turn she wondered if her prince charming was somewhere waiting for her - her beloved meant to sweep her off her feet. Her heart swelled at such a thought. Though she was willing to wait for her perfect match, she felt her impatience creeping nearer with every passing day. Smiling despite her sudden turn of emotion, she closed her eyes to enjoy the soft rays of sun upon her blushed hide. Her future was uncertain, but it was up to her to decide how her story would end.

@[Aquaria], I hope this is a good enough starter!

This foray across the continent had been one of mixed interactions. Pangea was a world apart from what she had come to be accustomed to in Ischia. Her new island home was a peaceful, happy place. The atmosphere was one of sanctuary. Pangea had felt more brittle, as though any misstep might result in much bigger repercussions than she could ever anticipate. The little sea mare still puzzled over the visit, not sure whether she had succeeded or not. Time would tell.

At the outset of her journey, the pearly mare had decided she would take the land route home. While she had traveled by sea to get to the far side of the continent, now she wanted to take the slower way. That way she could see a bit more of the world, and speak to horses she might never have encountered otherwise. This was a personal mission of discovery, on top of her political responsibilities. What she hadn't counted on, was winter.

Winter in the ocean was not terribly different from summer in the ocean. Go far enough underwater, and the seasons have less and less effect on the scenery. Currents may change, but snow was not a thing. Aquaria had originally been enchanted by the glittering power that fell from the sky and coated everything in sight. It had been a brief love affair. The aquatic girl was now coming to the quick realization that she absolutely hated snow.

It was cold, and it stuck to her hooves and after spending so much time on the tropical island, she hadn't grown nearly enough of a coat to be comfortable. Huffing and puffing as she went, she made her way steadily westward, hoping to find some way other than constant movement to be warm. It was getting to the point she was worrying about the membrane of her mane and tail freezing off with frostbite.

She was about to give up and resign herself to becoming a horsicle when a darker ribbon of color appeared in her line of sight. A haven at last. Her gallop across the remaining distance was springy as she tried to avoid the worst of the snow drifts, ending in a dive that deposited her in the center of the semi-frozen river. Things got much, much colder for a moment, and then much more tolerable as scales replaced her hair and her tolerance to chilly water skyrocketed.

As a nereid, cold was no issue. She could dive deeply and not feel a thing. It was one of many things she loved her mother's gift for. Now clothed appropriately, she surfaced, shaking drops of icy water from her face. The are surrounding the river was much prettier now that she could appreciate it without shivering constantly. It was a landscape she could probably melt into once she left the ink dark water of the river.

She paddled steadily to the bank, pulling herself out a little less than gracefully, dripping into the semi-frozen mud at her feet. Perhaps she'd follow the river for a while. It looked like it would take her north, which wasn't on her way, but it could be fun to explore that way. She walked a few paces, before stopping again suddenly. A pale shape stood out from the even paler background. More than that, a shade of green utterly incongruous with the current landscape seemed to be integrated in it.

"Hiya!" She hollered, hoping it wasn't just a trick of the light on her eyes and that she wasn't yelling at an oddly shaped snowbank. That would be embarrassing. She'd be the only one to know, but still.

@[Demetyr] Sorry for the actual novel :l

    Demetyr

Demetyr was not often oblivious, nor would she ever admit to being so. Merely, at the moment that another creature had materialized a short distance from her, she was captured by her own thoughts and the novelty of the land surrounding her. Freedom, thus far, had proven to be an intoxicating delight - one that she struggled to balance amid the other thoughts that spun a wondrous web of interest. In her mind, she would never have even comprehended that there would be creatures drawn up from the deep. Such things didn't exist in the world she had left behind her. To look down had never once been a thought that had occurred to her.

The voice, however, when it called out to the permanently blushed mare, startled her out of her thoughts and back into reality. Jerking her olive eyes towards the sound she was almost petrified at the sight of seeing another, seemingly equine, figure so encapsulated by ice and frost. Surely she would freeze to death. Rushing into the water, she gritted her teeth against the stinging cold of the water as her mind raged in contemplation of how she might be able to help the stranger. It was only moments later that the realization occurred to her that the mare was not in trouble. The sound of her voice had been too jovial, too pleasant to be one of complete panic.

Still reeling, Demetyr cleared her throat. "Hello," she returned the greeting rather hesitantly. "Do forgive me for being a bit blunt, but isn't it a bit chilly to be swimming in this frozen river? Surely you'll catch your death!"

Again her innocence poured out with a purity that some might find delightfully astounding. She was not judgemental by her tone, but merely curious and concerned as she continued to observe the oddly painted mare. Completely unlike any horse Demetyr had ever seen, her brows fell forward upon her face - deepening the expression with which she had chosen to regard her newest acquaintance.

"Wouldn't it be better if you left the water to the fish and joined me on shore?" She suggested, still completely unaware what it was she was asking. To offend was never her intent, of course, but it was simply her ignorance that laced her words and helped her to seem the child that she was.

Oh no. Aquaria watched as the figure she had spotted revealed itself to indeed be another equid. A pretty, blushing pale pink one, that seemed very concerned when it realized she was in such proximity to the ice encrusted river's edge. So concerned, that she dashed into the water, very near to where the sea mare had just exited it.

She laughed uncertainly, biting her lip as she waded back in to meet the worried, and now soaking, mare. "I'm fine, really. But you're about to freeze." She chided, noting the tremors of cold already spasming the pink girl's body. She lingered in the sluggishly running water as the new female left it, her head tilted curiously, smiling at the concerned phrases being lent to her.

"I have more in common with the fish than I do with most horses." She quipped, finally stretching her legs to surge ashore. It was easier to reach the banks this time around, now that she knew to expect the ice-slicked mud that formed it. Shaking excess water from her scaled hide, she smiled sweetly in greeting of her would-be rescuer. "That includes their cold tolerance. I'm Aquaria, by the way. Thank you for trying to save me!"

On closer inspection, the girl seemed a little younger than she'd first thought. And even half drenched, she was notably pretty. Still though, it wasn't healthy to be so cold. It was enough to make most folk ill, just a little ironic that she'd risked it trying to save the pearled water mare from the same fate. "We should probably get you warmed up..." She suggested, utterly lost on how exactly that could be accomplished. She could remove the moisture from the girl's coat, but that was about it. Nothing of her own talents would add heat to the chilled girl's body.

    Demetyr

Demetyr is a spoiled child, that much she is aware of. Her parents had doted on her and seen to her every whim. As a youngling, she had wanted for nothing and she was filled with gratitude for their selfless attention. However, she was not yet aware of how sheltered she had been. Treated as though she had been more precious than gold, she had been kept from everything that could be deemed as dangerous or foreign. Shivering, hocks deep in the river, she was blissfully unaware of just how little she knew about the world.

The strange mare's concern was comfortingly welcome and Demi wasted no time in following her implied advice. Leaving behind the freezing water, she exited the river and stood upon the frosted shore. Turning back 'round to meet the gaze of the stranger, she smiled sheepishly. It had been rather foolish of her to put herself at risk in such a way - especially given that the stranger appeared completely unfazed by the cold. It was remarkable.

Demetyr's curiosity plummetted to the forefront of her mind as she pondered over what she could possibly mean by her words. How could an equine have anything in common with fish? The very notion seemed absurd, but understanding quickly came as the mare stretched herself onshore. She was part-fish herself! The filly's mouth fell open in awe, and it only occurred to her that she was being rude when her mind recognized the sounds of a name falling past the stranger's lips. Aquaria, what a perfect name for such a creature!

"Do forgive me!" Demi exclaimed wonderingly. "I - I have never seen anything quite like yourself. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance. My name is Demetyr."

She was young, that much was true. Her features lacked the usual signs of maturity and her manner was that of a highborn filly. Even more noticeable, was her expectations of the world around her. Although not as incorrigible as some might automatically assume, it was very clear who she was. Thankful for Aquaria's concern, she nodded her agreement - her teeth clattering loudly as they clashed together. She was cold - and growing colder by the second. Warmth was quickly becoming something that the pale filly craved, but could not find. Perhaps Aquaria could show her how?

It was baffling, the way the girl managed a polite introduction even in the midst of pretty literally freezing to death. Aquaria smiled at the girl's awed expression once the sea mare's nature became clear. It was nice to be appreciated, but they really needed to do something about the soaked girl before sickness set in. Remembering the trick she'd used a while ago on her friend Pteron, she stepped forward to reaching distance.

"Happy to meet you, Demetyr. Wish it was under warmer circumstances, but I think I can help you a bit. D'you mind?" She nodded to the girl's shoulder, where she would touch her to do her work. Even now, the water dripping from them was crystallizing as it hit the frozen earth.

Her translucent mane laid flat against her neck as her mood settled into a more relaxed state. This making friends thing was much easier to do than she'd worried it would be. It really just boiled down to being kind when others needed it, and finding common ground to talk about. Easy peasy.

    @[Demetyr] super short, sorry :[
