    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

His decent from the mountain had been chaotic to say the least. The magic the fair had flowed through him changed him slowly. As if a great artist was painting a delicate picture.

His body grew first, making him taller then the average horse. Then his muscles began to bulge under his delicate hide, despite his slenderness. His skin became thicker, almost like leather underneath his black coat.

Next his hooves cracked beneath him, reforming into cloven hooves. The ground beneath him became steadier. The hair of his tail twisted and molded together leaving behind skin that's trailed into a black tangled switch. His mane and forelock thickened and became longer almost hiding his midnight eyes. His senses became bolder, stronger as he stood to look out at Beqanna beneath him.

Finally, his head began to split skin tearing between his ears as thick bone began to grow. They grew thick curving out slightly and then forward and up. The base was thicker and the ends grew thin to sharp points. The bones between that covered his skull and brow became harder as well.

None of these things hurt, but he would be lying if he had said it wasn't a mild discomfort that he would need to get used to.

His build had already changed to compensate the weight of his horns, but the trip down on narrow ledges had been tricky to manuever. More than once he had had to turn around and find an alternate path. His traction had increased and the blunt ledges had been easier to maneuver with his changed hooves and his new height.

He had been perfectly transformed into the protector he had remembered from his father's field.

Jakub spent the rest of the day traveling the borders of many lands and by the time he had stepped hoof back into Tephra the sun was setting. He stopped for a moment to appreciate the reds and oranges that settled into the horizon. This had been worth it, he thought, he would no longer be at a disadvantage to protect.

His face settled into a pleasant smile as he noted how his stamina had held true on his journey today. His muscles only exhibited mild discomfort. If he had come from the mountain unchanged he would surely be filled with exhaustion from not stopping.

Jakub let out a pleasant huff and trailed through the hot tropics of Tephra, stopping at a crystal blue green watering hole. His reflection peered up at him as he gulped down the cool autumn waters. He was not the most beautiful creature he had seen, that was for sure, and his brow crinkled a bit.
