    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

how come I never got used to the feeling of sleeping in a cage?
too long driving, too damn hungry; a tied-up hound but nothing stays

Under the veil of moonlight, Valdis slips from Sylva’s dark corridors and into a place of memory and love. Hyaline is in her blood – it thrums weakly in her veins – and it whispers to her in the dead of night. Mother is no longer there, but her childhood is. A time of no responsibilities and joy are lodged in the rolling hills. Admittedly, she misses the glistening lake and the open, starry sky.

Sylva, as much as it has given her, now churns her stomach. Of course, she is not leaving. It would be too easy, too satisfactory, for Mary if Valdis fled so soon. There is also Dracarys and Sinner to consider, but since her last conversation with the whore queen, the hellhound and slipping farther back in her list of concerns.

His name is enough to anger her.
But why is she allowing herself to fall into such a trap of emotions?
Because she is Solace’s daughter. Because she is Castile’s daughter. Although no longer together, they both cherish love and family above all else.

Even as the starlight glimmers across patches of her coat, marking her visible even in the middle of the night, Valdis placidly crests the multiple knolls until she is at the water’s edge looking at her reflection. Memories play back to her, reeling uncontrollably and leading up to this suspended moment when the world is quiet except for the crickets chirping. She says nothing, calls to no one. Solitude comforts her and settles her hammering heart even with her daughter sleeping miles away in the cold forest.
