    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

hope is a fire to keep us warm

Everything had changed so drastically in what seemed a single day, and yet nothing had. Momma had found them the moment they had stumbled from the mountain and brought them home. She thinks she must have been waiting for them, and though Momma had never said anything, she wonders how much she actually knows. She had never thought about it before, not really. But it had become more and more apparent as she started paying more attention that Momma always knew so much more than she ever said.

It had been strange, to come home to a party. Distracting. Until it was almost easy to forget everything that had happened. But when everyone had left, she had so much time to think. Too much time.

She’d hugged Daddy extra close, because she knows now. She understands the burden he carries every day. The fairies had made her a child again, but she doesn’t think she could ever forget. She knows what’s coming. What waits for her when she gets older.

And she still hasn’t quite decided how she feels about that.

Maybe that’s why she has been unusually quiet. It worries her that they might have noticed. She doesn’t want to have to explain. Doesn’t want them to worry. Daddy worries so much already, she could see it. She tells him every chance she can that she loves him, just to watch the worry melt into happy for a little bit.

She doesn’t want to be another burden to him. So she doesn’t say anything.

Feet digging into the sand, she ambles forward, brows furrowed as she idly splashes in the waves that wash rhythmically forward. She’d been looking for Dagen for a few minutes now. It hadn’t been that long since she’d last seen him, but she didn’t want to be alone. It is so much easier to get lost in her thoughts when she’s alone, and she wanted to avoid that as much as possible. Maybe Dagen liked to be broody, but she doesn’t care for it.

Even if it does feel unavoidable sometimes.

Her features light up when she spots him after another minute or so of idle walking, and she springs forward into a trot. She had grown leaner and lankier since they’d returned from the mountain, the angles of her youthful frame growing sharper rather than softer with time. Dagen had grown too, but he lacked the sharpness that seemed to define her edges. But she is avoiding thinking too much on why that is. When she reaches him, she slows to a halt, bumping her forehead against his shoulder affectionately before pressing herself comfortably against him, uncaring that she is blatantly invading his personal space.

No doubt he was used to it by now. No one was safe from her need for such close physical affection. Not Mommy, not Dadddy. And certainly not Dagen.

He growled and tried again, gritting his teeth and focusing on the skin over his shoulder. It was there, he knew it was. Why wouldn't it just show again!

    Fuck. Still red.

He sighed and gave up for now. It'd been at least an hour that he'd been working to push the stone to the surface, a new magic granted to him and his sister through their latest adventure away from their parents. They'd done what they could to help the rest of the world, largely thanks to Brazen's wild sense of adventure and dragging him along. Not that he'd ever let her go anywhere without him. Not too far, at least.

There were still times when they were apart, temporarily, like now. She kind of seemed like she needed a little space, and honestly, he could use a good minute alone too. They'd been through a lot in a short time. The second he'd given up on the damn stone under his skin he'd angled right back towards her by default, walking a ways before he could see her and took a moment to watch her.

She'd been quieter. They hadn't talked about what they'd learned about her future during their quest.

She was walking towards him too and his stern expression softened as she lit up and covered the distance between them at a trot. They'd both grown some but she was sharper and leaner where he'd filled more rounded with muscle. He pretended he hadn't noticed as he reached out and touched her shoulder in a return of affection, something he obviously wouldn't be doing so openly if there'd been others around.

He tucked his chin behind her neck and hugged her, rubbed his cheek against her then stepped back. "How's it going?" he asked quietly, his irritation from earlier completely set aside as he studied her eyes with veiled concern hidden behind a crooked little smile. "Already looking for another adventure?" he teased, because obviously he'd be going with her.

As accustomed as she is to his moods, she still notices the frown before it softened into something more affectionate. He is so determined to master everything, and she’s absolutely positive he was trying to make his new magic skin work. She doesn’t even need to ask.

She hadn’t tried too hard yet to make it appear on command. The occasional flicker told her it was there, but she had always been more comfortable taking the unconventional approach. The patient approach. She’d figure it out when it was ready to be figured out. No doubt it drove Dagen bonkers, but someone needed to balance him out.

She doesn’t say anything though. She’s very good at distraction anyway.

Scraping her teeth affectionately along his neck, she leans into him with a sigh, returning his embrace almost automatically. She doesn’t quite know how to put her feelings into words. Hasn’t since they’d returned from the mountain. But somehow everything feels bigger and more lonely now. Dagen at least feels the same, safe and familiar. And mom and dad. But they were both gone so much. Mommy with whatever it was that Mommy does, and Daddy with his other families.

It made her sad she couldn’t go with him sometimes. She’d even asked Mom if they could go with her. Soon, she’d promised before kissing her on the forehead. Which meant not today.

She sighs again, pressing her cheek against Dagen for a minute before lifting her head to glance restlessly around them. “I’m bored,” she replies on a soft huff of breath before Dagen proves how well he knows her with his next question.

With a grin, she pulls away from him, tossing her head as she spins around, eyes going to the water. “Yes!” She pauses, eyeing the waves before turning to glance at Dagen. “We should go somewhere. Right now.

Mom and Dad weren’t here, busy with their whatever else’s. It was just them, together. Them and endless possibilities. Endless adventures that could help her forget her youthful troubles and impetuous boredom.

She held him back and he could breathe easier. He couldn't even imagine a life without her, if she'd been dumb enough to go on that quest without him and never return or stay all grown up and not really be his twin anymore. Terrible. All their life, they'd been each other's constant, even more than their parents.

She sighed and backed up, grinned at him for guessing what she wanted. Another adventure, some going out and playing.

"Yes! We should go somewhere. Right now."

He chuckled with a smile, snaking his head out to tap at her shoulder, nip sharply beside her jaw, then bolt away from her. He raced towards the water she'd been looking at, straight to the beach with his wings stretching out instinctively beside him and pumping with his movements.

It was probably the lightest his heart had been since their quest, and he was glad of it. He knew he was often too serious, but that was kind of just him. It felt nice to be able to let loose with his sister though when they were alone.

And sure enough, as soon as he caught someone in the distance he slowed and lost his smile, his dark blue eyes sharp and watchful. Two girls, it looked like. Maybe Brazen would want to meet them. One was black and white, and the other a gray grullo and white. His sister could definitely use more friends, so he tucked his wings back at his sides, just as red and cream as his tobiano, and approached them at a walk, fully expecting Brazen to go in all guns blazing with that bright smile as was her style.

As always, Dagen is so quick to pick up on her moods, just as she is to his. Perhaps it’s not how everybody works, but it is how they work. And she wouldn’t trade it for the world.

His chuckle makes her grin, and she tosses her head as he nips sharply at her jaw before taking off. Her head lashes out as she tries to take her own nip at her his retreating haunch, but he’s too quick, slipping from her grasp as he rushes towards the ocean. She doesn’t even think as she barrels after him, feet digging into the soft sand, allowing the wind to whip every thought and worry from her mind.

There is something so exhilarating in feeling the blood rush hotly through her veins, the burn of muscles as she forces them to work, the deep draws of salty air as she breathes deeply with each long stride. It’s freeing, in a way, to push her body into work so that her mind can set aside its worries.

As they reach the ocean, she skids to a halt, sand spraying around her as a bright peal of laughter escapes her lips. She hadn’t realized how much she’d needed such a release. Slamming rather heavily into Dagen, she bites his shoulder hard, her eyes bright with playful mischief even as she rebukes him for his earlier teasing.

She blinks when he straightens, his wings pressing close to his sides, gaze going to something in the distance. She turns, eyes following his until they land on two girls, perhaps a little older than they are, coming up the beach towards them. Dagen, now so contained, moves towards them, but Brazen pushes past him, eyes bright and curious, ears sharply forward as she steps into a trot.

“Hi!” she shouts, still a distance from them, though each step closes that gap. She slides to a halt once she reaches them, neck arched as she tilts her head curiously, a smile curling her lips. “You seem familiar.” she announces rather baldly. “Who’re you?” She grins rather precociously at them before recalling herself. “I’m Brazen, by the way!” She gestures briefly at her brother then. “And this is Dagen.”

just a bit of a surprise.

Things have been weird since they arrived on this island. Daddy was sad, like in a deep dark way the two of them didn't understand. Mommy is different now. But in a good way! Then there's the Boneman. She seemed to like him, had even done the nasty with him. Yuck. Zoe still doesn't understand that fact. And Defy came out from it. So they have a brother now, too. So it seemed the girls would have to accept them both. But the man still creeps her out. Defy called him daddy. Mom and Dad called him Dovev. Zoe had decided she would call him Boneman. Or Bones. Ha, she liked that. Dad seemed to trust him, had let the man lead them to this place. They said this is an Island Resort and they'd be safe here. It was enough for Zoe, at least.

But Daddy said he'd needed rest, and Mommy went to find him. Defy seemed hell bent on not sharing Bones, and that was fine with them. So Zoe led Zyn off with her to check out the new place. They'd spent a good while laying low, in hiding while they waited for Dad to find them. She was tired of laying low. They said this is a safe place, so there isn't much reason she can think of not to go explore and maybe even play a little.

She nudges her twin's soft mousey colored neck, lipping at the border between the gray and white patches. Until now, she has kept Zynnie tucked under one of her ravenesque wings as usual. But as they make further away from the others, her spirits rise along with her wings. She flutters them lightly, making the black feathers rustle and whisper against each other as she bounds up into a trot. "Come on, Zynnie! Let's go check out the beach." Her lips broaden into a smile as she leads the way, wings floating along with her strides.

The tide is out at the moment, leaving some shallow pools visible for their observations. Zoe walks along from pool to pool, sniffing at the little creatures she could see. "Cool! Lookit that!" She remarks when she finds a starfish. She's never seen it before, and wonders how it moves around with no eyes she could make out. Her dark, glittering gaze dances up to her sister's face to see if she was as awed by it as she was. Zynnie has Dad's eyes. Rich brown with little purple specks set into a pretty head like Mom's. She is becoming shapely where Zoe is a bit leaner and more petite, her face a bit more angular. Her smile is warm at her sister before they resume their walk. Her gaze takes in the ripples of the ocean, the birds in the sky, the waves ebbing and flowing on the shore. And then the hoofprints on the sand. Still moist as though freshly made. Her ears perk up and her eyes brighten. "See that? Let's follow them." A little game of Detective Fillies.

It isn't long before they find the owner of the tracks, not far off ahead. She only pauses for a moment, looking to Zynnie to be sure she is okay going to meet them. She gives a little shrug and nods her head out at the pair, then advances toward them. One spots them in return, followed by the other after they collide, and then begin toward them as well. The second to notice pushes past the first, and Zoe's head tilts curiously, a small smile touching her lips that widens after they- no, she- shouts a greeting toward them and kicks up her pace. "Hi!" She shouts back.

The closer they get to each other, the more she can see the likeness between the two of them. Both red roan with white patches, even similarly marked. The filly precedes the colt, who carries wings like herself. Her grin widens and her gaze glitters in the sunlight at them when the girl comes to a sliding stop before them. She's pretty, standing there with her neck arched and head tilted, the smile charming on her lips.

Zoe can't help but move forward to meet her, her own neck arched and stretching her nose out to bump and breathe into hers. She can't help but be interested in meeting another set of twins not unlike her and Zynnie, although maybe a little younger.  "You look a little familiar too, but I would have remembered you both." She steps back to her own twin's side, offering her wing up and out for her, smile still softening her ebon lips. "I'm Dizorien, but I like to be called Zoe. And this is my twin sister, Zynistra." She would let her sister speak for herself some, in case she didn't want just anyone calling her by her nickname. She wouldn't mind having Zynnie all to herself and their family either.
