    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

There weren't many places to hide on the relatively empty Isle; it was cold and still wintery, even in spring. But the girls never needed to feed on the grass and plant-material (where there was a relative lack of), and so for now, it didn't matter. Mama was here for food, and cosiness, and Papa was there to make Mama and them, safe. That's about all they needed.

Yet the twins were different as night and day - Sheen would venture out the farthest, and as soon as Wen was convinced it wasn't utterly death-inducing dangerous what her sister was doing, she'd follow like a loyal puppy. Not that she always liked the adventures, but she was curious also, even though she didn't usually dare to start the adventures herself. Besides... Sheen's her sister. Someone should keep her out of the worst of trouble.

And she didn't really have many others to turn to, either. At least, not ones that she knew well enough to trust so fully.

So today like many days, she would follow her chocolate sister around, despite her instincts yelling at her to just stay home with Mama and cuddle her because, well, Mama's usually warm and soft and brings the warm milk. Nothing wrong with wanting all of that, she would think.

Sure it was fine to hang around with Mama and Papa.  It was warm and safe and comfortable and dreadfully boring sometimes.  Yeah, Mama did her best to take them around the island and show them new things.  Yeah, that had been fun enough and it had worked, for a while.  But the little chocolate toned filly had still grown restless;  there were only so much snow and rocks and ugly trees you could look at and explore for so long.

Oisin's little legs itched to go to the mainland of Beqanna.  Mama had told them stories of the different places that waited for them across the sea when they were big enough to cross it.  Well, okay, maybe Mama hadn't willingly told them the stories.  More like, Sheen's mouth continually asked questions of their mother's whereabouts when she had gone for a time until the leopard mare would finally, begrudgingly give the annoying filly a tidbit of information.  Her dark eyes would light up with wonder, but only temporarily satisfied with the news because one day soon, she was determined to get her little butt over there.

But impatiently she had trotted circles around her sister that morning, coercing (maybe more like pestering) her into going along with her to a different part of the isle today.  "Come on, Wenny!" she chattered, tugging at her younger sister's metallic mane with every circled pass, "Let's go do something! We won't be gone long! Let's go over there! Or wait, no.  Over there! No, we went to that rock before already, I think.  Yes, let's go to the first place I said!"  She'd been practicing her quieter voice lately, and she was quite proud of herself for not making her sister cringe just now.  Not that she cared if she made other people cringe, but she cared about her sister.

Satisfied that Wenny was finally following, she began to lead the way to a different ugly tree that they had never been to yet.  Tossing her head over her shoulder to look at the fairer twin she giggled with anticipation, "What do you think we'll find today?!"

Sisters were important. Family is important, is what Papa said but to be honest, her twin sister is of course then the most important figure in Eurwen’s still-short life. Oisín liked going out, on their own, and well, sometimes little Wen had to admit that she liked exploring things, too. She was, at the core, as curious as her sister, but just more scared that she’d accidentally hurt herself or some small creature, and thus her explorations were about ten times slower had she gone about it at her own rate.

Sheen had quite a hard time toning down her voice. Mama usually said that they could all hear her in her quiet voice too, though to Eurwen it still wasn’t that quiet (because she could be much quieterer than her older twin). But she followed, and when the chocolate and gold sister brought her to an ugly tree, the white-rosy girl made a face. ”Sheen, we’ve seen the trees already! They’re all brown twisty things with stingy needles!” she now complained. Couldn’t they do something different then? To Oisín everything was exciting. But at the pace Eurwen discovered the world, she had found out that some things were just similar to another, and they did not need to inspect every tree to know they were all roughly the same.

Following her sister nonetheless (someone had to prevent her from deopping from the nearest cliffs), the pink-spotted filly tugged her sister’s golden tail. Perhaps she’s stop running away and listen for once. ”Snow. Rocks. Needles. Moss. More snow?” she listed from past experiences with the island.
