    COTY

    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    Quiet
Their mothers had insisted that they go play instead of shadowing them for yet another day. But trailing along after them was always bliss for her. Each of her mothers were careful to walk slow enough that she could keep up and they kissed her face when she didn’t complain of being tired. She knew they only wanted her to get stronger, as Scorpio had reassured her while she cried on a particularly difficult day. He always knew just what to say to dry her tears.

And today was no different. He swore up and down that he wouldn’t walk too fast or let anyone bully her for being different from them. It made her giggle and smile when he pretended to buck out at the hypothetical playground bullies. More importantly, though, it gave her the confidence she needed to follow him away from their home in Icicle Isle.

Virgo had warned them not to go too far but she never mentioned the plague or the things that go bump in the night. Normally her simple requests were enough to keep the twins in line but they are so very hungry for adventure this time around. The same old hills and slopes are not as fun without the snow to slide down and so they seek out a new place for their games. Quiet glances over her shoulder from time to time, convinced that Caw will come swooping down from the air and catch them beyond their borders. But the skies are clear and their journey goes on without a hitch.

She’s exhausted by the time they arrive at the playground and yet she continues to limp along after her brother. Being apart from him for even a moment terrifies her more than her legs hurt. When he finally stops, she presses tight against him and buries her dark face into the perfect white and red of his shoulder. They are strange compared to the other children, she realizes, and searches for comfort in the way Scorpio smells like home. Her bright eyes observe the way the others all run and chase each other with mouths full of laughter. This was a mistake, she thinks to herself. They should just go home.

I’m not so sure about this anymore,” she says in a trembling whisper. Already the world has begun to spin and she leans further against her brother. She never fell when he was around.
