    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

    QAEN

It’s mid-morning and Qaen cannot find Maertin. He has looked back at the place where they slept last night, and at the spring that he had fallen into last week. He looked by the big rock, and had only been distracted from his search a little by the brightly colored tree frog he found on a wide green leaf. He isn’t aware of any ongoing games, and anyway he and his twin brother usually play as a team rather than against one another.  The little black appaloosa is wandering amongst some small banana palms, letting the fronds brush over his short back. "Maertin?" He calls, his childish voice rising in a question. When there is no answer the boy moves out towards the shore but doesn’t leave the trees. Birds chitter overhead.

Qaen scuffs a little hoof in the dirt and scattered white sand, washed up from the nearby beach. "Maertin!" His brother had better not have left him behind again while sneaking to the mainland. If someone asked him where Maertin was he might have to lie and he couldn’t lie to his Father or Mother, and surely his siblings would figure him out if he tried to lie to them. Qaen didn’t really care for the water, he seemed to lack any affinity for it. Maybe that’s why Maertin had left him behind, so that he wouldn’t have to jump across the sandbars and slow down their escape. That was okay, but next time he would go too! He wasn’t scared.

Someone is is coming down the beach. Overhead a parrot starts squawking an annoying alarm that makes Qaen pin his ears back. He springs away from the racket and down to the beach to see who is there. "Maertin!?" He shouts as he jumps out of the trees and lands in the dry sand, a dark contrast against the light terrain.

Some twins come in matching sets; Brennen and Galilee’s youngest sons certainly don’t fit that bill. Qaen is black and spotted, Maertin is simply chestnut. One twin deals in light, while the other in water; but they are in other ways unmistakably brothers. Often they bicker amongst themselves, but a united front is presented to the world. Still, boys will be boys, and Maertin has a mischievous streak a mile wide. He has many siblings and cousins and Brothers with whom to interact and play his games, often with Qaen at his side, but sometimes he can’t help but make his other half the target of his lapses of judgement.

He’s tucked himself into the shadows, practicing his quiet stalking. His color does not help him, but somehow he has stayed concealed from Qaen thus far. But his twin’s calls of his name grow increasingly frustrated, and his attention span for hide-and-seek grows shorter and shorter. When Qaen bursts from the foliage onto the warm sand, Maertin is only a breath behind, and he uses that breath to expel a loud cry of “Boo!” from his throat as he lands just feet behind and jumps forward to tag his brother’s rump with his nose, irrelevantly unaware of the alarm cried by the birds overhead. “You’re it!” he claims proudly, amber eyes laughing.
