    Assailant -- Year 226

    QOTY

"But the dream, the echo, slips from him as quickly as he had found it and as consciousness comes to him (a slap and not the gentle waves of oceanic tides), it dissolves entirely. His muscles relax as the cold claims him again, as the numbness sets in, and when his grey eyes open, there’s nothing but the faint after burn of a dream often trod and never remembered." --Brigade, written by Laura

To do list: 1. Wait for tonight.
    2. Try to take over the world.

She had waited... oh yes, had she waited, and watched, and noted, and waited some more. She had studied, and practiced, and perfected her crafted chore. But it had been worth it, for the day came she felt ready as if she were called. As if that beautiful goddess (Potion) that aged her had appeared once more to direct her towards the proper time and place. Obviously, Potion had not appeared, and, obviously, there had been no tutelage since the mysterious mare had graced them out of infancy. Callbear, however, had taken a liking to wondering what the mare would have done in certain situations.  This was one of those times. Callbear knew it wouldn't be easy to get what she wanted but she had to start acting on her plans.  Spring was the perfect time to make a move,  there were babies, and merriment, and a general joyfulness that she could masquerade behind. She knew it was time, there was no need to wait any longer.

The cool spring winds licked at her mane pulling the gold hairs into her eyes before flicking them away. Callbear's dark eyes turned to her brothers who talked quietly about... whatever they muttered on about when she wasn't around. She silently watched them for a moment before turning to them and calling them to her. "Come brothers, it is time." Sidlet turned his head to the side curiously danced across his features before he allowed the thought to emerge, "Time for what?" His short attention span was enough to make her head spin, so she shot him a look and flicked her tail at his face as she turned away from them again to glance out into the distance again. "Vengling, do something about him... I can't deal with saying it again." Vengling's silver black body came up next to Callbear's purely black one, leaving the gold spotted frame of Sidlet to be left in the background alone. "Sidlet, the same thing we do every day, try to take over the world. Let’s not irritate sister so, come now"

And with that, they all left the little clearing in the in between lands. Callbear led the trio into the open and across the land until their destination loomed before them. The show and cavern filled the forest. She knew the dark ones lingered there. That those who waited in the abyss did so in the shadows within the forest lands. She had watched them, the nameless and shifty she knew they would wait within and she knew she could gather them, and that they would work in their favor. They would be open to her whims, or at least that was her impression. It seemed the better route than trying to fake it and take over some other lovey-dovey herd.

Callbear made no sign of stopping when she reached the border of the forest, and a quick glance made it clear her brothers were with her. All three held heads high like they belonged. In Callbear's mind they did, if she was going to command these misfits she must play the part. It was logical. Their stature wasn't threatening, but it dared someone to stop them; to tell them otherwise.

It was quite the image, their gold embellished bodies, and ice blazes, and all three a shade of black moving through the desolate lands, Call at the head and Vengeling and Sidlet behind, they moved through the land. She made no intention of stopping her tour until someone forced her to, or she found her first dark-clinger. She would have her way or she would wreck havoc on any and all. But why stop her? She wanted what they all wanted, she was sure of it.

Spring was an utter pain the ass, the flies were proving that single handedly. They took a liking to biting him in the tender meat there and buzzing annoyingly around his ears. Maybe if he were not so sweet they would leave him alone, maybe, but he wouldn't be able to find out now would he?

His little nook in the forest was even more irritating. Too small, too dark, the creek to the east was hardly waterfront property. Yet he was camped out in the security of it, it did what thick leaves will do for seclusion. Kept out the prying eyes and kept in the keepers, he had been selectively weeding it in that aspect. Potion was proving herself an ever useful and obedient child. While she had developed a certain mild softness he did not care for, she did what she was told and she did it with a practiced and skilled hand.

It started with the three foals she claimed from a dozing, color changing mare. They were delightfully colored, sleek, dark and they had begun to practically worship his daughter. At least the female had, the ringleader if you will. Then there were another three, more little dark things but they had inherited the family pigment and Kirke didn’t need so many now did she? Girls must be taught lessons sometimes and Kirke had shamed him by denouncing the Cove. He once held high hopes for his flashy winged daughter and that had all been tossed down the garbage shoot. Too much free will, too much like her Mother should have been. Were she a smart mare.

A perfectly pouty, lavender lip curled into a sneer at the thought. He would do better this time, only the best, only the powerful, only the obedient. There were standards to be upheld, he had a vision.

He had never played by the rules at games either.

Kirin noticed the military march into his little abode, the golden haired girl always at the forefront. Now something told him she was a girl he could expect to play. ”Are we going somewhere?” Melting from the treeline, wings outstretched he smiled a cruel smile. It was too wide and too eager, there was obviously something behind such a display and no doubt these three would soon find out what it was.

Flies never bothered her, not that she was immune to their itchy little legs and sting of their bite, but she simply never paid them any mind. Spring was just another season, just another time. She was more interested in her mission. The forest was dark, the sunlight only making it through the canopy in beams and patches of light. The three weaved through the trees and brush, stopping to listen in on conversations and sounds that would signal a hidden horse within the brush around them. However, none had shown themselves. No just the boring meeting, lover’s tryst, or other normal happenings. No, those were not the ones she wanted. Deeper, she would have to go deeper to the center of the forest, that was surely where she needed to be.

There was an eerie quiet throughout the oak, cherry, and walnut trees, that she loved. The only sounds were those of nature and those that she or her brothers created. Beqanna could be so loud, all their bickering, and talking it made quite the racquet. She did not have the patience for it. However, she could but on the show so that was what she did. Her black coat gleamed as they stopped in a clearing, it was larger than most but it was still secluded from where most of the visitors to this area were. A breeze swept through the area whipping her gold mane and rustling the bits of loose forage on the floor. She was content with this spot, this spot would do fine for their merry band of misfits. However, a form appeared from the trees and stepped into the light. From the shadows appeared the lavender pelt of a stallion, his wings extended from his sides, a grand show of pomp and circumstance. His words fell with flair as he eyed the three who stood in formation.

Callbear eyed him, now he was the type she wanted on her side. Bold and brazen, he would surely make a great addition. Callbear walked towards him, a smile growing on her face. She eyed him, hungrily, lustfully even. ”Sure we were, but I’m more interested here now. You have a name, stranger?” She had closed in on him now, she took his space as her own, boldly taking his scent without waiting for permission. His extended wings kept her from running her curved form down her new interest. But did the next best thing in her proximity and inflection. She didn’t know that she was speaking to the king of seduction himself, she didn’t know that she was falling into his will more than he, hers. But she was pleased for the discovery and there was time for her to find out the reality of the situation later.

They were a funny little bunch, a ragtag team but he could (in a sense) appreciate that. Perhaps some even thought that of the Covelings, a motley crew as they once were. Even back then he had assembled them from the reaches of Beqanna, plucking them from their day to day lives and introducing them to a new one. A better one.

Was that not a service, was that not a gift? What was this life if they spent it, wasting away in the monotony of harmony? Not having what they desired, when they desired it?

If he could manage to bend the girl then the other two would be his by default.  Briefly he paused, running scenarios through his mind because while some might think his actions were not thought out, or done by crude means, there was always a rhyme or reason to them. Things had a way of falling into place and usually he need just nudge them in the proper direction. It would not be too hard, ever practiced in the arts of charm, he had a way of getting what he wanted- in the end.

She will make this easy, he observed, the golden haired girl pressing towards him.

There was an air of enticement she sent with her words, her pose, a smug smile found its way woven on his pastel velvet muzzle. He was amused, simply put, she wanted to play indeed. “How forgetful my daughter is,” he began, a small chuckle following. “My name is Kirin, we’ve a mutual acquaintance, Potion she is called.”  His words were even as she circled him, taking in his scent and curling about like a kitten.

“She does good work my girl, tell me, can you three do the same? I’ve a need of workers, those with passion and drive.” Slowly his wings lowered, the left reaching to trail her spine with a single lavender plume, she could dare come closer now. “Do you know one thing better than power my dear child?” The question was laced with husk, a venomous hiss lacing the end, dear child, if she were not careful she would receive more than bargained for. The boys might try to intervene but a little rough housing never stopped him before, even still they might become part of the roll.

    Tsk, tsk.

The thought she knew what she was doing, she thought that she would be able to control the situation and manipulate the lavender hued stallion. She had practiced on some nobodies in the meadow, they melted at her touch and quickly turned to gooey moldable mush. She was far from perfected but she was vivacious and attentive to how she needed to adjust. This situation was no different, this winged beast with his sultry smirk and devilish eyes was different. He didn’t puddle around her feet, no her smulder but make him bolder, and his own thirst didn’t give way to her. No She had underestimated the beast, but she liked a challenge. Oh yes, she did indeed. But he spoke and she lost her moment and she would have to take a moment to regroup and try a new angle.

Kirin. She tasted his name in her mind, and it was one she felt she would never forget, never want to either. No she rather thought he would be important, especially if he was in with Potion. She had been a vision, and he was her father surely he would be equally as visionary. The two stood just out of reach of each other, ever so close but ever so far. She toyed with the thought of going to him, as he had lowered his wings before he spoke, but she didn’t quite trust it would be the right play. Maybe it was his eagerness, it was that beyond that flirtation… she wasn’t sure, if her usually sultry play would be the right one. Instead she let the distance stand, she would let him reach, let him lead, learn his play. She listened to him finished, her equine brow raised in her own questions, her own curiosities. Her act was just that, an act-- a good one, but she wasn’t about to break character first.

Vengeling must have sensed her shift from the offensive. He came forward, his silver-black body looking smokey-grey next to his sister’s slick black one. His face was stern, business-like, he ignored that Callbear kept her sultry mischievous eyes on Kirin. He knew it was her play, but he knew that when she wasn’t being offensive it was his turn to come in, she would be be ready soon enough to continue, ”Our abilities are not in question; we are more than capable. I think the question here is, what’s in it for us?” His voice almost eerily nonchalant. It wasn’t cocky, or abrasive. Calm and collected--calculated with just a hint of amusement. THe response hung in the air the three holding the game in a standstill for the moment. The dance was well underway, and the three were still unclear how it would end. He was the hardest target they had taken on, sure the end final flourish would be a doozy. Kirin’s final question about power hung in the air now, what could possibly be better than power? Lavendar stallion still focused on callbear and Vengeling on him. Until Sidlet spoke up answering the question. ” influence. Or that is what Callbear says at least…” He smiled, a sweet innocent thing. He was along for the ride, his skills set was being the sweet one, and it was yet to be needed. Someday he’d play out a long-end game. Callbear shot him a glare however, believing the stallion was being more hypothetical.

Call took the lead once more, her eyes still toying with the beast, ”Yes, you tell us what is in it for us, other than your body, I have a feeling I could have that easily enough. And it wil do nothing for my brothers.” A quick spike of her brow toward the sky before it returned to rest spoke it her brazen undertone. A new angle to try on the beast, one day she would know his buttons, one day she would learn to work him like putty, she would agree to help him if only to continue to figure him out. ”But I think we can find agreeable terms, we’ll help you out, as long as you follow through on your end.
