Scalped was originally born on the plains to an Sioux tribe's herd of horses. She was prized for her medicine hat markings and considered good medicine herself. The war chief's wife gave birth a son shortly before Scalped was born and she was given to the boy as a gift from his father. They grew up together, the boy and his little medicine-hat mare. In time, they became the fastest pair on the plains, winning all the horse races and being noted as the bravest in the raiding parties and buffalo hunts. But like all good things, it came to an end when they came up against a wily old buffalo bull. He managed to hook a horn in Scalped's breast, ripping her open and she fell dying to the plains' grass. As she fell, her boy managed to strike the killing blow to the old bull with an arrow but the two beasts came together in their death-throes and the boy was trapped between them. Little did Scalped know, the buffalo's horn had cut across her breast and her boy's thigh, striking him a killing blow from which his life's blood bled out of him and all down Scalped's side. When his brothers came to remove him between the cooling flesh of the buffalo bull and Scalped, he was already dead and they mourned him a long time across the plains. They mourned the loss of Scalped too but left her where she lay. She awoke days later, alive and with an ugly reminder of what had taken place left upon her - a scar of puckered flesh on her chest that sometimes still twinges with old ghostly aches of pain. She has been to many lands and gone by many names but this is the most fitting: Scalped. That's how she knows herself now in Beqanna. When she first came, she met a few horses in the field but took a shining to Chain who lived in the Chamber at the time - she was impressed by his strength and warrior build. He seemed to recognize the same in her even though she had long ago given up fighting and the like. She disappeared after that time, met Wolfclaw and bore him a colt named Arzi. She disappeared again, then popped up in the meadow and met a stallion named Modred. They became friends and he invited her to the Falls. During this time, she met a stallion named Red Pony and was pregnant during her brief time in the Falls. She disappeared again and bore her daughter in the Falls' forest, naming her Americus. Both of them disappeared for a time. Scalped returned to the meadow, met a stallion named Pazuzu and eventually disappeared as is her pattern. She bore him a bay colt with addax horns and this was her son Mandan. They met a stallion named Finnley in the meadow who offered them both a home in the Gates but they both disappeared again. Now she has returned, seeking to perhaps make a life for herself in the Deserts for a bit. She's pregnant again, by a black stallion named Infection and the rest is yet to be written in the long sad saga that is Scalped's history.
